My initial take on the Nvidia 3d vision set up was very skued. I was at first skeptical about how well the system would perform in the more graphically intense games. I had never attempted to try them out at a store, or demo center. Set up was amazingly fast and clean. No bloatware or un-needed software. Very simple to follow instructions, the only issue I had was minor, it took me a while to get the Samsung monitor to properly get into the 120hz range. After that I was good to go. The build quality of both the glasses and monitor are second to none. The durability of the glasses is very good, and should last through years of use and ware and tear. The test system is as follows:
GPU: Evga 9800GX2
Mobo: Evga 780I FTW
CPU: Intel E8400 Running @ 4.05Ghz
Ram: 4Gb OCZ Reaper 1066 running @ 900Mhz
PSU: 600W OCZ Stealthxtreme
I tried a fair amount of games with the set up and I was surprisingly impressed. The glasses were somewhat uncomfortable due to the fact I wear glasses, and they became a bit tough to keep on after an hour or so. The game-play was immaculate, in Left 4 Dead I was amazed by the quality of the 3d system. I was blown away, it looks so much more realistic when your playing with the 3d mode on then with it off. World Of Warcraft was just as stunning. The detail of all the spells and characters was just mind blowing! I could not believe how well they preformed in such games. I played a bit of Wanted and I was a little drawn back, it did not preform as well as some of the others. Mirror's Edge, Half Life 2, Bioshock, and Company of Heroes were all amazing to play in 3d. The realism and the way the character layout, and interface were somewhat separated by the 3d imaging was really cool. I had many family and friends come over to try it out and play for a bit to get their opinions. My friends and family were amazed each and every time one of them put the glasses on to play a game, they were in awe at the sight of such technology. I could barely keep my 14 year old nephew off my main PC! The stunning and visually appealing images were by far the best I have ever seen from any type of hardware on the market today. Seeing as there is no other company on the market today for such a system, Nvidia hit the sweet spot on this one for sure. Giving gamers exactly how they would like 3d imaging to be represented. My top 5 pros and cons, and final thoughts are here to end my review.
Pros:
Durability
Vivid graphics and colors
Easy set-up
Wireless technology
Upcoming Windows 7 support
Cons:
Dollar value
Limited choice of monitors (size and make)
The glasses are a bit awkward even if you wear prescription glasses
No OpenGL support as of yet
No 3 way or quad SLI support as of yet
Final Thoughts:
If you have the money than by all means GO FOR IT! I would recommend this set up for anyone who enjoys playing games in such a beautiful 3d environment. The Samsung monitor is a nice addition to any gamers hardware as it is very clear, bright and very appealing to the eye. Some 3d movies are supported with more releases in the future, with plans on making bigger monitors and displays that will supports this technology. The one drawback to all of the is that you can only play on a 22" monitor as of yet, and Nvidia stated that they are working with manufacturers to get bigger and better monitors for the market to supports this technology. They did not state who they are working with, when the release of larger monitors will be, and what sizes they are looking at producing. Overall, Nvidia has hit a home run here with this product. The game-play is as good as it gets with the 3d vision. Beautiful colors, great support for DX10 games, and intense graphic appeal are all the things gamers want in these trying times of the graphics card wars. Only one question remains to be answered. Will this technology be the Betamax of our time? Or will it outlast and become a houshold "must have" for the PC gamer. I give this item 5 out of 5 stars. But who am I to speak for the people, take a test drive at your local PC shop and you be the judge!
