As a young gamer, I grew up on and souly played Final Fantasy-like RPGs and survival horror like Resident Evil. The Legend of Dragoon is one of those RPGs that will stay with me till the day I die. With that being said, let me continue.
This, along with a select other games, spiralled me into the gaming universe. LoD is one of those games that got deep in me and I believe I've played the game over 3 dozen times in my past. No lie. I've managed to somewhat keep track.
With a great story that relates to one that of Final Fantasy VII, its hard not to get wrapped up in this game. Seriously, it's engaging. LoD is like Bioshock, it sucks you in and keeps you seated to play the game for as long as it takes to beat it. (And then some)
During that time, this game had some of the best graphics on an RPG. It beat FFVII in this department with detailed polygon models, backgrounds, and eye soaring FMVs. The details in battle were pretty surprising though still not as surprising as a game like Legend of Legaia, but still surprising. FFVII comes close in battle but not as close. Same goes for FFVIII.
The gameplay is an extremely innovative one that I always ask myself "Why didn't any devs pick up on?!" Constantly, the additions (or attacks) keep you playing and actually make you want to keep fighting. In other RPGs, I tend to chicken out and not be bothered by random fights by running/escaping. In LoD, that changed. I WANTED to fight. I wanted to master each and every addition because it was so much fun. Addicting is one of many words to use.
The dragoon transformation is another game mechanic that was considered a gimic to other RPGs but to me, the dragoons are the BEST RPG mechanic (other then the Materia in FFVII) I've ever played with. It's so much fun to watch the characters go into Dragoon form over and over again. Not once did I ever think of changing to short morph mode. (the scenes are cut out with the option enabled) Think of it this way, wouldn't it be awsome to see Cloud do his Omnistrike 3x in a row?! Hell yeah! I'd break my ass off for that. LoD made that a close reality for me as the Dragoon Additions are fun to mess with.
The soundtrack to the game has to be one of the BEST I've ever had in a video game. That's right - I said it. FFVII tops it, but still - LoD is AWSOME! I'll crank up my speakers to listen to the boss fight theme anyday, anywhere. This game was also one of the few back in the PSX days to have voice actors (RPG genre wise). Even though they only talked during FMVs and inbattle like Legend of Legaia - they were only one of the few for an RPG.
The only downfall I've ever encountered with the game is the frequent lockups or slowdowns with the PSX, PS2, PS3, and even the PSP when converted. Sometimes the game will just continue to play after a Dragoon Magic is finished in an infinite loop.
Like I said before - this is one of the few few few games that'll stay with me to my grave. And then maybe some. I would recommend this game to any RPG fan anywhere, anyhow, anytime.
