Pros: High Quality Graphics. Decent Overclockability. Tri-SLI support
Cons: Performance is only slightly improved over the 8800GTX

Well - Coming from a pair of 8800GS cards...I was hoping to grab a new card that would truly smoke the performance that I had been getting from my lower-end cards. I searched around for a decent priced 8800GTX - but couldn;t really find the right one at the time I needed it. Then - I was walking through Fry's and found an EVGA 9800GTX for a mere $179.99 (after MIR) and decided that this would be the one I got.

Out of the box...It is quite a bit larger then my 8800GS's are. I'm not sure if this size is comparable to the 8800GTX - since I have never had one...but I had to change my fan set-up in my P182 in order to fit the card in. The middle HDD cage fan would not fit with this card.

It installs like most other cards in the dual-slot configuration...but it does take up virtually every millimeter of space for those 2 slots. If a 2nd card is added in SLI - the bottom of the top card will literally be a needlepoint away from the lower card. Like the 8800GTX - this card does require 2 6-pin PCI-E plugs in order to operate...however - there are adapters included in the box.

The first time I fired up - I was a little concerned - as the screen resolution defaulted to 800x600...and MEDIUM color settings. I changed the resolution instantly - but forgot to change the color to highest...so for the 1st hour - I thought my card was a DUD. I installed all of the drivers...and included on the disc were the basic set of bundle software...which I never use.

I almost immediately ran a 3dmark06 run to see where this new card of mine would fall in. At first - I was a little disappointed. My stock card barely performed better then my OC'd SINGLE 8800GS. It scored a mere 12.2K (No CPU or GPU overclock). My 8800GS scored almost 11k when OC'd.

Once OC'd - my 9800GTX finally made its way up to 13K...and when a slight CPU OC was added in (Q6600 @ 2.7GHz)...It finally capped out at 13641. I was certainly a little disappointed in this - as my SLI'd 8800GS's with the same CPU overclock came back at 14.4K.

So - needless to say - I was a little urghhh about this new card...but then I began to take a look at the individual results. The FPS between my SLI'd 8800GS's and my single 9800GTX were pretty darn close. (See Below). In other words...this single card performed about the same as my SLI'd lower cards.

In conclusion...
I'm overall happy with my purchase...however - I was expecting a slightly better result. I will still be ordering a 2nd one to SLI and hopefully can get myself to above the 17k mark. I'm not going to pay too much attention to scores...and look more at the FPS.

If you are looking to upgrade your 8800GS or lower card...then this is really good card for you to pick up, however, if you are already running 8800GT's or GTS's...especially in SLI, then I would not bother spending the extra money for these.

Green is my 9800GTX @ 792/1206
Red is my 8800GS's in SLI @710/1000

Pros: card is beautiful
Cons: placement of the power plugs

ok first off o upgraded to SLI 9800s from SLI 8800s and i can say there isnt much of a difference. i mainly got them cause of the black PCB and overclocking. they seem to get the same FPS in crysis as the 8800GTS 512 in SLI. to put it short im getting 2 GTX 260s to replace them. not that impressed, to me it just seems like a 8800GTS 512 with thats TRI SLI capable.
