i usually use bassbox pro 6

and don't forget that you need to make crossovers for each box so be prepared to learn a lot of electronics and hope u know how to solder.

solding I can and have done, but all my previous crossovers in automotive audio systems have been pre-built, I am prepared to learn and research a lot, I have already gotten a good taste of what I have gotten myself into, so I know i can use all the help/advice I can get... that is why I am looking for suggestions and help in speaker designing software and ideas.

The ELT525 towers are almost exactly the look I want. are they real wood or laminated? does anyone know the rms/max watts, it doesn't seem to be listed on there page and pdf. manual links are broken for me.

the ELT525 5.0 sale is great and is my first alternative, but it's not what I had in mind. I'd like to get speakers with a higher sensitivity around/above 95db and I don't need more than about 100w rms. I think since I'm building, 1 driver and tweeter will work best.

the ELT525 5.0 sale is great and is my first alternative, but it's not what I had in mind. I would like speakers of higher fidelity, 'volume' is not what I'm going for, although it seems to come with quality speakers. I'd like to get speakers with a higher sensitivity around/above 95db and I don't need more than about 100w rms. I think since I'm building 1 driver and tweeter will work best. How important is it to have the driver and tweeter be of the same brand/line or do they just need to be well matched.

Any recommendations for a receiver? I'd like something with the lowest THD possible and only need around 80wpc. 5.1, hdmi and under $500 max$750
Drivers and tweeters of the same brand and type will give better tonal matching, when a sound moves from speaker to speaker it will sound better as there will be less change in the sound. I've read that if you are differing between brands of speakers then it is important to try and stay with the same material driver across all of the speakers(kevlar + kevlar or metal + metal etc).

I'll leave Jacob to comment on the EL525's but I thought they were a detailed speaker and great for the price, I doubt they are aimed towards volume such as Cerwin Vega speakers seem to be.

I read somewhere that paper and 'paper like' drivers will reproduce vocals the best, and the the harder drivers are more for max spl/volume, can any one confirm this with references or opinion.

EDITED: How important is it to have the driver be of the same brand/line as the tweeter? or can I get away with them just being well/closely matched? most of the HT drivers I have found do not come with or don't have available matching tweeters, I have only been able to find this in 2-way car speakers that come with crossovers, but i'm sure these crossover's are mostly of low quality compared to HIFI HT speakers.

Don't sell the ELT's short before you actually hear them! Just 2 days ago a couple friends stopped by and we had a 2 hour listening session where we even compared a couple different sources and a couple different amps.

spoilers:
-The Virtue Audio Virtue 2 with the big psu is a great little amp. Driving the ELT525T's was a breeze for this little amp and the mids and highs were a bit sweeter than my Marantz SR7001, but the lows were not as controlled. This was especially when I hooked up my two subs, so we listened without the subs (with both amps)
-The Oppo BDP-83 is a heck of a player, at $500 is is very, very similar to my modded Music Hall CD25.
-Everyone that has both seen and heard the ELT525's has come away impressed. One of my friends ordered a pair!

Regarding finish, they use real wood veneer and are finished to perfection. The only thing I would change on them would be a wider base and better binding posts. The wider base was solved by making myself a pair of outriggers (the floor in my apartment isn't quite level) and the binding posts can be upgraded from the Ninja.

Outriggers:

And a Monitor vs tower shot:

The crossovers were designed by Danny Richie of GR-Research, he has many, many projects if you are considering that approach. I highly recommend the NX1 or NX2 (sealed version)
http://www.gr-research.com/index.asp...ROD&ProdID=147
I'll likely build a pair myself once I have more $$$

The highly regarded Ninja upgrades are in part designed by Danny Richie. You can also get a plate and high quality binding posts that will match the ELT cutout.

And some reviews of the ELT's
http://www.affordableaudio.org/ELT525M.pdf
The Towers received the Tone Audio Exceptional Value award for 2008

and review in Issue 18 (have to download it all)

Awesome post Jacob, very well done. It alone could serve as the basis for a guide on av123 products and possible upgrades.

Awww. You remembered. <3

LOL.

All jokes aside, you should definitely consider the ELT525, they sound amazing and the quality is top notch. If you're planning on getting them, get them in Rosewood, it's a beautiful finish.
