Plans not 100% compete but getting close

$1000 is a lot to spend on an untested design, although, since I have spent much more than that on a single subwoofer I feel it's not bad for 2 full range towers.

however it's still a lot of money so I will be spending more time in the coming weeks reviewing and improving my plans, hopefully with higher quality parts and better prices.

I might design something with a 6.5" or 8" PHL woofer for comparison but they don't have the low end the fostex has and are more expensive. Or I may change the design layout and build a wider shallow tower so I can use a 10/12" woofer.

because of the new price tag I have upped the bar on my goal and now compare them to speakers like these using the hivi tweeters rt2/rt8II

A couple of unanswered questions I have floating around the internet. I figure it's better to plant lots of seeds... maybe someone here will have the time or experience to answer a couple of them or make recommendations.

Should I sacrifice some low end and find a driver with a higher sensitivity for a flatter response curve/better matching with tweeter or can I level things out with an equalizer?

How well will the fostex driver reproduce vocals? how well if I Increase the bass level (a lot)? how well with out much equalizing? vocals are the most important in HT audio to me, but I like the extra low end extension for stereo music.

Any suggestions on improving parts quality or price on the cables, Xover, misc parts, etc?

What will the estimated total power handling of this setup be? I plan on using the Emotiva UPA-7 SEVEN CHANNEL AUDIO POWER AMPLIFIER
125 watts RMS x 7 into 8 ohms | 185 watts RMS x 7 into 4 ohms

should I tune the box to 30hz or would a 52hz-60hz tuned port be better?

Would a sealed enclosure really make a difference in distortion in the 85hz-2000hz range vs a 60hz tuned port?

What difference would it make if I placed the port lower? They need to be forward firing because they may be closer to walls than I would prefer.

with the box tuned to 60 hz would the tweeter or woofer distort first(with/without equalization)

Is and Lpad worth using? when should someone use an Lpad? in simulations it only drops the very high end and does not make the cross over any smoother. It seams to me I would be better off using an equalizer to lower treble.

hate to say it but im not too sure on what you should do. i built a few subs using bass box pro and tweaked it using that to find what i needed. but thats about as fare as i go. i like bass but all round speakers i would tune to 55hz or so. not to sure. i can help design the box if you want (i got auto cad). in all truth you may need to make a few diffrent boxes to find things you need to do if since its your first time in this type of speakers.

as for the port facing i would face it back but maybe try looking in to a radiated speaker?!?! that may work if you get rid of that port.

all i can really say is to try to find a diy speaker building forum and ask there because i would be going in blind also.

I haven't really followed the thread too much of late, but just thought I'd throw this out there...

I know you were leaning away from the ELT525 setup, not that I can blame you... the DIY bug is strong with me as well!

But...

How about a complete 5.0 ELT525 setup in Cherry (1 pair towers, 1 pair monitors, 1 center) and a MFW15 subwoofer for $999 That's one hell of a deal. regular price $1849.

I do look at the AV123 sale every once in a while but, I have a long way to go before I give up on my project(I am sick with DIY bug!). I probably have another month of research and learning before I put my towers into production.

I changed the drivers today to 2 SEAS 7" woofers. and changed the Xover to a 4th order. which makes my model response look much better/flatter. The cost is about the same as before. With the added design complications I am trying to design a decent looking Xover enclosure to mount on the back of the tower for easier tweaking.

I have looked into a passive radiator design but I plan on either going with a simple sealed or single ported design. For the port I have been thinking about moving it to the back side, since I am moving this month to a house I may have a room where I can pull my speakers away from the wall.

I have recently started posting questions on DIY forums and have gotten a little feedback.

When I have a solid design in production I would be very interesting in getting a schematic made, I have never used auto cad, If your interesting in doing this I would be happy to put your name in the credits if/when I publish my design plans.
