Default AKG K 701 vs. K 601

I'm trying to decide which headphones I should get next, this will be my first Audiophile headphones, which I'm jumping the gun from a Sony MDR-V150/MDR-V200 to the AKG K 701/601. I'm leading more towards the 701's though, what are your thoughts?

Music I listen to is Trance (All sub-genres, including Hardstyle) Japanese Pop and Japanese Rock

For trance, I don't feel the AKG K's will suit your needs the best. the K701 is also nortious hard to drive i.e. it needs a headphone amp, and even then, it picky with them 'synergy' wise.

Look into some Ultrasones (e.g. HFI 780, HFI 680) as they are made for electronic music tbh.
For electronic music, you need of course bass but also transient speed.

I haven't heard 601, but 701 are great cans. You really do need to invest in a good source and amp for them though. I do find them uncomfortable though.

What is your total budget and what will you be using for amp and source?

I'm trying to keep it at around $500 CAD, my "local" audio stores sells the 702's for about $400-450 though, however I'm trying to look for the 701 because of it's colors

If all fails, 271 MkII...

Finding Audiophile stuff in Canada is hard >_>

I would go for a nice used pair of k701 or HD580 and then build or buy a millet starving student, or other tube hybrid amp. Should keep you at/under budget and if you can find a nice alien or bantam DAC.

No kiddin' since it's a place I haven't heard before I rather have a new pair of 701's though, the looks on the 701 just catches my eyes though, I doubt these are even near portable...

For trance im think you should get the Ultrasones HFI 780 im also thinking of getting these. If u want to spend a little more money get the Ultrasone HFI 780 ALO mod allot of people say it sounds close to Ultrasones's edition 9 which is Ultrasone's top of the line.
Stock http://www.amazon.com/Ultrasone-HFI-.../dp/B00101XVH2
Modded http://www.aloaudio.com/store/index....dex&cPath=1_54
Extra Info on Headphones just read a few pages http://www.head-fi.org/forums/f4/so-...-780-a-289917/
And Btw These headphones dont need a amp but it always benefits all headphones.

The AKG K701 and 601 are considered to have not very powerful bass, so listening to trance with them will be kind of bleh

AFAIK, the K701/601s are best for classical or acoustic music
