I don't want to hijack the other fellow's thread so based on this response I have a question.
As much as we know that a digital cable is a digital cable (Monster's optical is no better than monoprice's), then why would an expensive blu-ray player work better than a cheap one? Isn't Blu-Ray, from the disc read to the signal at the HDMI port on the head (tv or projector), all digital? There would be to DAC or ADC or amplifiers to contend with along the path. Convince me otherwise?

One player could have a better read head, causing less read errors. The converters could be better (the optical interpreter, then the one that converts to HDMI format). That is of course speculation, I don't know the intricacies of Blu-ray players.

I just looked this up after reading the question but it is pretty interesting. Its similar to very high end audio signal transmission.
http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/hdmi1.htm The info is encoded before being sent from the player to the tv.

Digital doesn't = everything is equal. Yes, the source is the same. The 1s and 0s are the same, but the quality is determined in the digital to analog conversion process.
There are many things that count: The power supply, the laser/transport, the clock, the receiver chip, the DAC chip, and the output stage.

back to the Oppo, reasons why $500 is justifiable. -it is a universal player, meaning it will play not only BR, DVD and CD like most DVD players do, but it will play SACD and DVD-A discs. It will not-however play HD-DVD or HDCD, but I do not know of a single player available that will play those two formats as well as the above mentioned ones. Additionally, the only other true universal players by Marantz and Denon cost much, much, much more. -it is a reference quality DVD player that uses the same chip Oppo used in their TOTL upconverting DVD player that set the benchmark all other DVD players are gauged by. -it has a dedicated analog stereo output that gives dedicated CD players costing 2x a run for their money. -Oppo has great customer support I got in on the first EAP so I've had it long before everyone else!
