Compass Through USB or Optical (Toslink)
How should I connect my Compass Dac / Amp for gaming 1st and music 2nd?
Or should I sell the compass and purchase an Asus Xonar Essence?

Gaming or music, it shouldn't matter which connector you use. Use whatever sounds better.

Well my mate let me borrow a 25 Ft optical cable from monoprice. It honestly sound like the compass has more of an "umpgh" to it.....like more power behind it

The SPDIF receiver chip is superior to the USB receiver chip in the compass, and in almost all DACs.
Protip: use coaxial, not optical. optical is derived from the coaxial signal, and just adds a conversion process. therefore, optical can technically never be as good as coaxial. also, i'm sure you have an rca cable lying around the house somewhere. much better than going out an getting an optical cable. also, the compass is WAYY superior to the essence stx in terms of 2-channel performance. better power supply, better components, MUCH better output stage, 100% discrete headphone amplifier (!!), and a real volume control.

Optical TOSLINK from Monoprice for sure. I don't have 'trained' audiophile ears but I can tell a difference over 3.5". Never used a coaxial cable though...
