Default Turntable?

Ok so i know this is not really computer related but it is sound related.

I would like to get a turntable for LP's. I have no idea what to get. I dont want to spend alot right now. If i get into it more i will buy a better one.
My audio receiver does not have a dedicated phono input if that matters.
I know on other receivers i have had that had Phono inputs, if you would plug something else into the phono input, it would not sound right so i dont know if it is something different.

This is for listing to music only not DJing. I dont think i need a usb port b/c all the records i have/plan on getting i have on my computer already.

My dad has one of these he picked up to rip his LP's to CD. Works pretty good actually.

Moved to the hi-fi subform

there are some excellent entry level tables on the market, but be prepared to spend about $300 on a table and another $200 on a phono-pre. My entry to TT I went with a Ariston Audio RD11 model E table and a custom tubed Mcallister audio phono pre. If I were to do it again I'd go with a non-floating table as they are easier to set up.

look at the entry level project or music hall tables and maybe a NAD or belari tube pre?

I know you're not looking for an expensive tt setup, so these are two GREAT options for you! They are both $100, all you have to decide on is what style you like better.

Stanton t.50
Numark TT1600MKII

Hook it up to any receiver with phono inputs and you are good to go. Craigslist/ebay.

For better sound, upgrade the cartridge to something from Shure or Ortofon. They offer excellent needles around $50. A good cart is the best bang for the buck when it comes to turntables.

I am a DJ, and I use Shure M44-G carts. I love them, they sound awesome. Plenty of output, clarity, and bass. Great tracking and easy on your records. It's not an audiophile cart, but thats not what youre looking for anyway.

So for both of the above i would need a pre-amp correct? I do not have a Phono imput.
Edit: I have a sony turntable right now but i beleve the cartridge is bad on it. Can i just replaced that with a high quality one and have a half way decent turntable? Or does it not work like that?
