Hi OCN

I am trying to find a digital decoder so i can have active speakers in a surround sound setup but haven't been able to find any, if you know of any good ones that would be great.

for everyone who doesnt know what one is it is like a box with a volume control and like 5.1 analog/digital inputs and outputs as volume controlled 5.1 analog.

if this will be used with a sound card you can just use the different outputs... however a much, much easier way to do this would be to purchase a receiver and standard speakers. You'll likely save money and achieve better sound quality.

is there a way where i can get teh standard reciever speaker outputs (amplified) to like rca connectors without it been too loud then reamplified my the active speakers?

You'd fry things by doing that, the amp is designed to work with specific resistances on the speaker outputs (4-8 Ohm), using it the way you want to would most likely fry the AVR and your active speakers.

The only stand alone 5.1 decoder's I know of are AVR Pre-amps and they all seem to cost £1000+ ($1800+)

I think it's a discontinued item though. If you could find one on ebay that would be dope.

you could use a receiver with pre-amp outputs. You can probably find a good receiver with preouts for much less than a pre-pro.

It is possible to find a multichannel DAC, but that will give you line level outputs without any volume control.

I still stand by my original assessment that you should get passive speakers.
