Default Recently curious about going Hi-Fi.

I recently found a new love for music. I mostly use Rhapsody to listen to my music, but I have an extensive mp3 and cd collection. Most of my mp3's are 128kbs or 256kbs. I would love to get a good set of headphones (step up from my crummy skullcandy ear-bleeders) and an amp.
Being a college student I A. have around $120 to spend, and B. am running my audio from an on-board sound card from a laptop. What should my first purchases be? Would a pair of good headphones be undermined without a amp? Or is an on-board audio card enough to justify the purchase? I am comfortable soldering my own amp together. Any input is greatly appreciated!

What type of music do you enjoy? What sort of headphones are you looking for (circumaural, supra-aural, open/closed, etc.).

Your budget won't allow you to access high end products, but for that money I would look into a Grado SR60/80/125 or Alessandro MS1. You don't need an amp for them and they will be driven well-enough out of your onboard or laptop output.

Well, alot of things like red hot chili peppers, beatles, to tantric and even hip-hop. I would prefer for them to be closed circumaural. Thanks for pointing me in a direction!

Either the Sennheiser HD280 or Equation Audio RP-21 can be had within your budget, and both will sound OK out of your laptop directly.

I would go for the Equation if you are a fan of increased bass response, or the Senn if you prefer a more flat, uncolored sound.

Yeah, thanks to everyone's input I turned to a pair of grado's s60i. They should be here later this week. What would be the best way to test out these new headphones? Like is there some compression-less files that are given rights to be distributed? I will have access to some good cd's to test it on along side.

Can't wait to post my opinion of my first pair of quality headphones.

The Ultrasone Test CD is generally considered to be distributable - if you Google around there are several places from which you can download it.

Wow.. My eyes are now open. I thought I loved the way my skullcandy earbuds sounded.. The Grado SR60i's give me almost a religious experience. Thanks to everyone, my speakers on my laptop now sound like crap by comparison! I am in love!
