Either behind a sofa/chair or in a corner... both works.

Sub placement is always different depending on the room and the sub. I've had subs that were way too "boomy" when placed near a wall or corner. I'm not a fan of boomy bass and prefer tight, fast, hard hitting bass.

Put the sub on your chair. Then walk around the room whereever in the room it sounds best move the sub to where that spot is.

thats a good idea actually and its not like boomy or anything but before I had to have it way louder to really get the lower frequencies and therefore made stuff rattle heaps but now because there is less power going into the sub it doesnt make stuff rattle

Any other good speaker placement tips?

Every room is different, place it all around the place and sit and listen.

Face it to the wall, away, up, etc.

One problem with corner placement, is most do not fit there. Small 10s, 12s do, but for me, if I were to place in the corner, it would stick out a good meter into the room.

You have the basic idea right, but your methodology is a bit off. Place your sub on a table right next to your listening position. If you place the sub on your chair likely it is padded and it will diffuse much of the sound.
Then crawl around so your ear level is about the height the driver will be. Then listen for the position that the bass sounds most tight, clear and musical and place your sub there.

Other tips, use dual subs for more even output and use a sub EQ or bass traps if you have bad room nodes
