Default Getting into vinyl - updated

New question on page 2

__
Hi guys,

I recently found my dad's old record collection in storage - and there is some purely awesome stuff in there (all of Zeppelin etc).

I need some recommendations for a turntable (and all its accessories), as well as a phono preamp if necessary (I already have an m^3 headphone amp which runs to my HD650s, but I'm pretty sure you cant just stick a turntable into the m^3 with no preamp)

My max budget is AU$400 - although if there is a sweet price point at like $450 I might be tempted. I would prefer cheaper if there isn't a huge increase in SQ.

Cheers

I recently started getting into vinyl as well, and from the advice I've gleaned it seems the most oft recommended path is to go 2nd hand for your first TT and get one from the late 70's or so. Check around some garage sales, pawn shops or thrift stores. You could probably find a vintage receiver there as well which would have the phono connections.

Here's a good thread on budget tables to keep a look out for over at Hi-Fi here.

If you're set on jumping in with a new setup there's plenty of helpful folks over there as well, but I can't really give you any information on it since I'm in about the same boat as you.

Cheers dude, +rep

So I'm basically looking for a late '70s - early '80s TT.

Can I put any cartridge on any TT? Because most people recommend replacing the cartridge on 2nd hand TTs that you buy.

Oh my god dude, all Zeppelin in vinyl? That's amazing.

I like vinyl, but I don't prefer it over CD. I definitely think it sounds more natural than CD on a limited number of genres, but for most genres CD still kicks ass.

My favorite album on vinyl would probably have to be Fragile by Yes.

Sorry I don't really know anything about turntables and had nothing to contribute. Except that for vinyl listening, I think you should totally rock speakers.

The Audio Technica USB turntable is one of the best newer ones.

Doesn't that defeat the purpose entirely?

Yeah, there is no way I am going to buy a usb turntable. Waste of time and money when I already have my trusty FLAC collection.

Yeah, I really want to get some vinyl and a nice player, also a good amp.

I've seen a lot of the music I like coming out on either vinyl only or vinyl first lately, things like Kitsune, Boys Noize, Siriusmo, D.I.M etc... There is a great record store I know called Rough Trade that does it, every time I go in, I just want to buy it all

It is a real turntable, but has a usb cable on it so you can rip your vinyl.
