I personally don't see the point of using lossless for a portable setup tbh.
Better off converting to AAC as the Zune supports that too.
Foobar2000 plays WMA lossless no problems AFAIK.

I have a Zune HD and all the music I get is in FLAC format. I have found dB Poweramp Music Converter to be the best converter, hands down. I personally use the Reference version which costs $36 for a key but it there is no free utility I have found that is even in the same ballpark as it.

I mainly use the Reference version because it has Multi-CPU support and can do batch conversions. If I have a folder with all my FLAC files that need to be transcoded, all I do is rightclick--> Batch Convert and after confirming the folder, this windows comes up:

These are the settings for the best WMA Pro that the Zune HD can handle. After selecting where I want to transcode to, it does everything automatically. With my sig rig I can transcode about 20 songs with 2-pass encoding in around a minute.

I can't stress enough how good this software is. I normally don't buy any software I find online but this is an absolute must if you need to convert anything music wise. It can also convert to and from all major music file formats.

I have also heard the argument that lossless audio is useless for portable media players but I don't feel like having multiple versions of the same files on my computer so WMA Pro is all I need.

Edit: Also, Foobar 2000 is my main audio player and works fine with WMA Pro. Here's a link to the software

what... All my flac files are 40/50MB for each. I don't see how a flac song is 7-8MB.

WMA lossless 9.2 supports up to 96Khz & 5.1 / 24-bit (VBR Quality 100)

WMA 10 Professional supports up to 96Khz & 7.1 / 24-bit & VBR 768 kbps bitrate, but no 16-bit support only 24-bit & 2.0 / 5.1 Channels

Using dBpoweramp Music Converter to convert lossless to lossless will give you the same result.

Honestly I convert all my songs to wma 320kbps for my zune. Not sure if AAC is supported though

AAC is supported by the Zune. I'd go 192 kbps AAC.

This. I use DMC as well, and it is the best especially with the multi-cpu support

But that's overkill. It really is. 192 kbps AAC is better than 320kbps and VBR -V0 mp3 (both LAME encoded) scientifically.
