It's rated at 80w per channel and the sound pails in comparison to the old, no name antique thing.

I have friends with some of these vintage stereo's; pioneer, onkyo, marantz, and they are power houses. Easily push speakers to ear bleeding levels. [The downside is that they sometimes lack in convenience features.
i got this stuff from my father, i am currently in college, and i didnt bring it with me.... no room in these tiny dorms...

so should i keep my onkyo amp? its a TX-27. puts out about 40W at 4 Ohms i believe

the speakers are custom made towers my father bought at a local shop when he was in college. early 80's... they have (2) 12 inch drivers (2) midrange and (1) tweeter. they sound good, but im always looking for better.

also, i see a lot of speakers now days are 8ohms.

As for Cerwin Vega, I think their time has passed. I remember liking some of their speakers when I was 12yrs old, about 15yrs ago, and what caught my attention was their ability to play loud and tons of bass. As I listened to more speakers I realized that the CV's weren't what I wanted. I heard speakers that had better sound, just didn't have that over emphasized bass.
yeah youre probably right about that....

Nowadays, we have tall skinny tower speakers with multiple drivers to make up for that larger driver. It probably has more to do with aesthetics than anything else. I'm sure that women don't want multiple large boxes sitting in their living room. They have a large enough top to where they can put a ton of junk on top of them, but as soon as they start playing, all that stuff is going to fall off.

i like the look of big towers. my dad has some towers with a single 12inch driver and my mom puts pictures on them... haha

Most shops now are going towards Home theater and it's hard to find a good shop. Where I live now, I haven't seen one shop that has a dedicated listening room just for speakers. I bought my stuff when I lived in Cali and there were plenty of places that I could listen to music.
this is what im saying. i used to go to those rooms with my father and it was amazing. bring your own cd and rock out in those rooms. haha

there arent any around me anymore. its all home theater stores with little tiny speakers and all that BS

what should i do, because as was stated before, i would really like to test this stuff out before i buy

Your state has some of the highest end audio boutiques in the country. If you're having a hard time finding one, simply locate the nearest authorized Linn dealer to you. Linn requires that a dedicated listening room is present and that only 1 pair of speakers is turned on at any time. I've owned both a Linn 2 channel system and an entire Linn surround sound system. The Linn AV5103's "Music in the Round" is the first time I've ever preferred listening to music in surround sound over a 2 channel system. While I agree that top notch 2 channel systems can be incredible, technology is almost to the point where surround can match it. Of course, you're talking about incredible amounts of money. A Linn surround sound system costs roughly the same as a nice condo.

I'd be surprised if there isn't an authorized dealer near you unless you're in the boondocks.

Linn actually has their own recording label and the quality is amazing. They redo lots of different types of older albums.

Yeah, their top stuff is extremely expensive, but it's tough to say that after hearing it. Despite their record player costing upwards of $25k and their cd player costing $20k, they're both widely known as being the best in the world. I've heard both and I honestly can't say which is better between the record player and the cd player, but words can't express how utterly "musical" both are. I used to have a Linn Numerik DAC with a Linn Karik transport and even that combo was absolutely stunning. My friends used to come over and listen to music for hours on end. Even if you're not in the market, treat yourself and give a listen if you find a boutique near you. Your ears will never stop thanking you

Linn's Music In the Round is designed for 5.1 and was only available on the AV5103 preamp that I know of. Some of their newer preamps may also have it, but I haven't kept up with the latest products for the past 3 or 4 years. Like I said before, it's the only surround sound preamp that I've owned or heard that surpassed the best 2 channel systems I've come across.
