I would suggest Pioneer VSX-1019AH, Denon AVR-790 or AVR-1910, Yamaha RX-V565.

I know from experience. Take those old girls to your bedroom for music and start from scratch in the home theater.

Ok ok, I'll start from scratch

It just sucks not being able to get everything this very minute, because that would really make my day. Either way, the general budget I'm looking at here is $500 right now for a receiver (though like we talked about, I can push it a bit higher), and then in a few months I'll be able to drop another $1000 or so on speakers. And I'd much prefer a higher quality 5.1 setup to a lower quality 7.1.

So what do you think for the speakers then? Just get a set of those Level 2s but use centers for the rear? How about the ELTs that were linked earlier, how would they compare?

And say I pushed the speaker budget to about $1500, then what would I get?

well get one of the previously mentioned receivers for around $500 like the pioneer vsx-1019ah and for $1000 for speakers, that av123 deal is fantastic. other companies you might want to check out are aperion audio, svs, hsu, and paradigm.

With a $1000 dollar budget those AV123's would perform very well. Don't worry about the receiver you get being 7.1 and you only having 5.1 speakers. The final channels can be disabled or even put in later with in-wall speakers in the corners just for that added depth.

You could replace $1500 with any denomination and noone would have an answer for you. If you said 15,000 or 15 million there is no absolute set at that value.

However, at 1,500 You could skip the 5.1 package and just buy 5 towers that fit in that budget (Perfectly matching center) and then you wouldn't need a sub at all accept the one you already have. 800 a pair for the AV123's as a separate is too much.

Example image but this room is WAY too small

Or get this and earn the respect you deserve!

On a less crazy note those elemental design guys have some SWEET subs but your room being so small you would most likely die if you used any.

-------------------------------------------------------

Lets worry about the receiver your getting first. Since we are ditching the old sony's we don't have to worry about the preout. We do now have to worry about powering whatever speaker system you may get in the 1000-1500 dollar range. 45 watts a channel most likely won't cut it.

See what you think about this one. The Denon AVR-890 http://hdtvdreams.com/denon-avr890-7...0-avr-890.aspx Cheapest price I can find. 105Watts per channel. etc etc

Cerwin-Vega's havent been known for there audiophile quality but these little bastards are excellent. You could do 3 pair and double up the center or get the matching center http://www.brandsplace.com/0341-cerve5c.html
I have the VE series, well, just the VE-15s, and what I can tell you from that, they sound awesome. I personally wished I tried the VE center. Oh well.

the ELT525 deal at av123 is sweet. give them a call and they'll probably let you sub a second pair of towers instead of the monitors.

I've got a 10% off coupon if you want

Oh I know, I'm just saying if it's gonna end up making a difference in the quality for the price I'm looking for then screw the extra two channels. But of course, I won't complain about them either

But unfortunately in-wall speakers are out of the question for a while, my place is rented

Yeah, they all sound different for sure. Except I don't have a damn clue about the market and brands and stuff with home systems other than a few big names (Pioneer, JBL, Yamaha, Martin Logan, ...). So I'm basically just going on faith that what you guys say is good is good.

5 towers sounds like a great idea. Bookshelf rear speakers would have to go up on stands anyway in this place, so towers would take care of that. Not to mention, having proper bass on each channel sounds a lot more natural with certain things (like voices for example), and definitely has better imaging.

Speaking of subs, I'm gonna be moving the old stereo to my PC and I definitely want to keep the sub with it for the music. So that's gotta be part of the speaker budget as well.

That one looks pretty good. I assume the "105 Watts per channel" means RMS @ 8 ohms? Oh, and I found it refurbished for $500.

One thing I just thought of by the way. I don't really care for this but I'm curious in case it ever comes up...if there's some device connected to the receiver through the Component or Composite video input, would it be converted and sent over the HDMI output or only the matching analog one (component to component, composite to composite)?

3 floor standing speakers? im sorry but i dont get the point of having the middle speaker. if u are using that as a center channel i think thats a waste of money and room. center speaker is mainly for voice or audio and if that center speaker is being used for as a sub its useless too. sub woofer are designed to be FELT not HEARD. any home theater enthusiast would agree on me with that. u can get away in NOT USING A SUB but replace it with a BASS SHAKER.

Not having a sub definitely sucks for lots of movies (and music). But even speech has some lower frequencies to it, and just because you have a sub that doesn't mean that your speakers shouldn't be able to reproduce those frequencies as well. They don't have to be house shaking like a 12" sub (because, well, unless the drivers are that big they won't be), but they should definitely have at least something so the sound isn't "dry".
