It's fine for a HTPC.

You should be able to run 1080p BluRay even.

Is the CPU a Core 2 or Pentium?

To be honest, I'd say start from scratch. It may play BR ok, but any compressed HD material will play at about 2fps on that system. On my HTPC build I ended up going to a AMD X2 5000+ as I had a 2.2Ghz single core proc and trying to play MKV's even at 720P lagged pretty bad. At any rate my personal HTPC I just used an MSI K9VGM, threw a 5000+ on it, 1GB of ram and an 8400GS, 600GB of HDD space, and decent tuner card and it runs beautifully, I run through HDMI to my 37" LCD and all looks awesome. It doesn't take much money to build a Decent HTPC as long as its only being used for HTPC.

not real sure how you get lag....

I have several Blue-ray and High-def movies I play on my HTPC on a 56in big screen...

My HTPC consist of a TForce 550 with a 4000+ X2 @ 2.6ghz and a 6600gt video card...

I stream my movies over Gigabit network from a server box that has a old NF3-250 with a single core 3400 2.4ghz CPU....

I can watch 1080p, 1080i without lag....I dont know the actual fps but as long as it doesnt lag who care...

the rig should be fine for HTPC with a good wired connection if you pull movies from another pc or watch them native...

both my sever and HTPC just have XPpro with vlc...thats all for video

I don't have lag, when I was running a Sempron 3400+ which is a single core I had lag on anything over 720p that was in Xvid, or H/X.264. The problem is with most common codecs they're software decoded, so yes a good dual core like you & I have will work just fine, but a single core is going to have real issues.

He's running a 2.2Ghz P4, and even WM9 HD recommends a 3.0Ghz P4 or higher to play back 1080I/P smoothly, so yes for content that is compressed he will need a much beefier processor, as for Playing BR off an actual BR Disc as long as he has a relatively newer video card it should have hardware decoding in it for that.

you should be fine as long as you aren't trying to play the latest games on your HDTV. You'll want a nice hdd and a tuner card, probably a sound card or a usb dac
