Default Using laptop to stream from PC to TV?

I was pondering the idea of instead of getting another dvd player and stuff for our new tv in our basement. Would i be able to hook up my laptop to my TV and have 1080p playback.. Also my sig rig will be in the same room, but opposite side, is there anyway to hook them up and play off of that.. without using a 20+ ft dvi cable from main computer to TV.. thanks

As long as the laptop is newer that about 5 years old, it will definitely be able to play DVDs and DVD-quality video to the TV. However 1080P playback will totally depend on the specs of the laptop, primarily the GPU. I bought a Vaio for my dad last year that has a Radeon 3450 GPU and it was able to play 1080P flawlessly so any GPU similar or better than that should be OK.

As for playing from your sig rig to the TV, you could look at a wireless media bridge, but that would cost a lot more than a 20' DVI cable (which would honestly be easiest)... Check Monoprice.com if you want good quality, inexpensive cables.

Ya you can do that, Ive been doing that with my Laptop. It depends on what kind of outputs your laptop has and inputs your HDTV has. My laptop has a 9400m g with a HDMI port and my HDTV does to so it is no problem. As for streaming the HDTV content I would using a wired connection or a wireless N so you have enough bandwidth. A wireless g connection might work to but it might be cutting it close depending on the bit rate of the movie.

There are products available that will allow you to send video signal over a proprietary wireless connection, but they have a great number of drawbacks. I'd definitely consider running a cable if it's at all possible.

With the right entertainment laptop, yes. I am using an Acer Aspire 6930 with Bluray and Power DVD 9 that plays through Vista Media Center. This is roughted via HDMI to an Onkyo TX-SR606 to a 65" High-Def rear projection. The sound is phenomenal, and the picture is so good, you want to reach your hand into the picture.
I also down load direct from Netflix, and my wife streams Vietnamese movies. No need for a stack of AV equipment anymore.
