Default Antenna, TV gets channels. TV Tuner does not.

Hey guys,

I have an antenna that grabs stations floating around and when plugged into my TV, it picks up quite a few just fine. Great picture. HD content. Cool for local news, weather, and some of the shows in the evening. But when I plug it into my TV Tuner (an ATI Theater 550 Pro PCIe), it gets nothing but static. I tried using different softwares, from some opensource stuff, to power cinema, to simply using Media Center. All static. I'm sure the card is an analog tuner, but that should still work with some channels right? I mean, why is my TV able to pick it up and display but this tuner can't seem to do squat? Any ideas on what to try?

Very best,

Sounds like encryption? Looks like static, usually.

like you said, its an analog tuner. There are no longer any analog channels, so you need a digital tuner

I haven't watched TV or anything in about 3 years. In a sense I was living in a cave...

Picked up a $20 TV tuner, apparently it's analog so I get nothing. I'll just pick up a new one that is digital.

Any suggestions on a cheap digital Tuner? I don't need DVR or anything fancy. Just something that lets me view what the antenna captures. It would be nice to see one around $50 or less. I see no need to spend $100+ on the ability to see some local news channels that are free. Just want to view, nothing more. Surely there's something that can do digital TV tuning for cheap? PCI, PCIe are both fine.

Thanks so far guys.

Very best,

I have an Avermedia Volarmax with a USB interface and it works fine for cable but over the air I only get one station.

I wouldn't really recommend it.

Very best,
actually you could pick up on those digital to analog converters. you can get a coupon from the govt to get it for free. connect your antenna to that and then connect the converter to your tuner. wouldn't cost you a dime.

edit: damn i just looked. they stopped giving out the coupons at the end of the july

here is the cheapest good hdtv tuner. its $40 so not too bad

edit2: that might be half height though

Heya,

$40 is fine. I just want to make sure it will do the job properly. What do you mean half height?
