Default HTPC build for a friend. £350 budget.

Doesn't need a mouse, keyboard or monitor.

I was fairly impressed with that. It's under budget, just, and looked like it'd perform well.

I've chosen an 8400GS because it is more than enough to handle HD playback, has a HDMI slot, and using it means the motherboard GPU can be disabled and it won't hog some of the precious 2GB.

Another 2GB would be about £20 more and I've suggested lowering the HDD a touch and perhaps picking up an slightly better CPU.

That Zalman cooler seemed to be the other low profile cooler they had

No AMD's please. The request is an Intel computer.

for a htpc i would recommend a different hard dirve, i have 1 in my htpc, and i find it too loud, i would get 1 of the samsung ecogreen drives because according to what i have read, they are quiet.

edit: im gona be buying 2 of these for my htpc/server http://www.ebuyer.com/product/166989 as soon as i have enough money in my account to cover it.

you also may be able to get away with a cheaper cpu, i have an geforce 7300 and a e5200 in my htpc/server and they are perfectly happy playing 720p videos, havnt tried 1080p videos, if you no any 1080p sample videos i can test it out for you to confirm that they play.

Thats a nice HTPC, first off I'd switch out the Hitachi Deskstar. I have one in my Dell, and every time I load a program up it sounds like a engine starting. Other people have experienced this noise aswell. I'd try to get a Western Digital drive if possible. The 8400GS is a great choice for an HTPC, good enough for 1080p content. But it won't do audio over HDMI, if you want this featuer look into ATI's 4k cards and up. Usually a 4350 can do the job fine.

The CPU is a good choice, but you could probably save some money switching to the E5200/E5300. They will be adequate for the job, especially with the 8400GS.

But overall, nice HTPC build

The Nvidia 7300GS will not accelerate 1080p video. As far as I'm aware only the 8 series and up have the PureVideo HD decoding technology.
