I would like to build an extender for use in my living room to access the files off of my main HTPC. Its mainly for my dad to use so that he has access to files on my computer.
__________________I was wondering if this was possible for around 200$? I built my HTCP roughly for around 400 but i do not believe he needs everything i have. He just needs it to access dvd files from my computer to watch on his tv. so i guess to make it easier... heres an outline Needs to be small Built in video/audio Wireless Internet Needs a remote something full size for his sake of seeing thebuttons. Does not need to do 1080p. He is only accessing videos which i believe are only 480 (resolution of a dvd) Does not need alot of space Does not need a TV tuner We have HDMI, Component, and even VGA on the TV I Believe

Does it actually need to be a computer, or have you considered an extender like a Popcorn hour A110 or SageTV HD Theater for examples? Both of the ones I mentioned have Wireless N adapters that can be purchased to make them wireless, plus they play pretty much anything. They also support many online video sources like youtube and major tv networks.

a stand alond extender will not work for me i need it to read VOB files while maintaining the ability to view dvd covers and info. From my understanding most extenders will not do that easily

They both read VOB. As far as cover art and metadata is concerned the Sagetv HD theater will display DVD cover art if an image named "folder.jpg" is placed in the Movie Title folder or the VIDEO_TS folder.
__________________As for metadata I think you can paste in a .properties file and it will read that as well. I'm not 100% certain of that though. You could jump on their forum and ask. Someone built a Metadata and fanart tool. It's called BMT. It accesses a number of sources, searches and downloads metadata and fanart. I think it can be run as a command line to place metadata in the appropriate folders for you to avoid having to do each individually. Might be worth a look for you.

I have multiple files in Dvd file form. so its a few VOBs in a VIDEO_TS folder. If i understand it plays VOBs but can it put them together to play a complete uninterrupted movie?

The Western Digital TV version 2.0 model added an ethernet port. I'm not sure if you can add a wireless adapter to it though.

If you are asking about the two options I mentioned then the answer is yes.
