I'm looking for a silent (passively cooled no fan) video card for my HTPC build.
__________________I'm actually mounting the components exposed (no case) in a display cabinet so I need them silent. I need to know if anyone has any experience with an ASUS EN9600GT: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814121324 Having no fan, I know it will be silent - but does anyone know if it'll hand 1080p / Blue ray smoothly? The 6800 GT I was using would NOT handle 1080p/blueray without stutter - it would handle 720 ok but 1080 with lots of motion was laggy.

1080p is nothing for that card, even an 8600gt which is far weaker could handle 1080p

yes it will. Today's cards, a 8400GS would do 1080p blu ray play back quite well.
That card is not too bad for the price. Here are some better performing alternatives: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814125258 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814125282 the card you chose is definitely most bang for your buck.

Hmmmmmmm... is it worth paying the extra for HDMI? The 55" Bravia I'm hooked to has 4 open HDMI ports - I've been using the PC port up until now.

Picture quality will be the same between HDMI and DVI, but you can do sound over HDMI, so having 1 smaller cable is more appealing to some.
I do find it a bit odd that the 9600 GT has neither a HDMI or S-video output. It is usualy one or the other, but rarely neither. Not even a DVI to HDMI adapter.

For just 1080p... it's not a good card... too hot and power hungry.
Get a Radeon HD 4350 or 4550 instead as they will provide more playback features with UVD2.2.
