Default Quick Question About SPDIF...

I realize that DVI does not pass audio, but I have a Nvidia DVI to HDMI converter I got with one of my cards...

I have a basic G31 motherboard with 6 channel audio, but no SPDIF. Would connecting the SPDIF cable from the motherboard to the GPU work?

Honestly, I've never even thought to try this, since all my previous mobos had built in optical out...

Your GPU should have a connector on it that would allow you to, and then it would transport the signal over HDMI via the DVI port.

I believe the SPDIF In header appeared on all (nearly all?) nVidia cards that were 9xxx or later (incl. 2xx series). If that header is present on the graphics card & you have an SPDIF out on your mobo then, yeah, it should work.

The SPDIF is an internal connection that's a pair of pins. It's easily mistaken for a jumper connection, similar to what one would find on IDE drives. (Or anything else that uses jumpers.)

What ^^ said, there might be a set of pins on the gfx card for audio to connect from the mobo to the card.

And that spare port on your card is more than likely a 7-pin connector which can use , s-video cable or breakoutbox 7 or 9 pin..
