Default 1080p with dvi to hdmi adapter

Hey guys I'm looking to buy a new t.v. and I've narrowed down some choices. They all have vga and hdmi input but no dvi sadly. I have an older geforce 5200 fx with a dvi and vga on it that is going to be used as the main computer for the tv. I've heard that if I hook up vga to the tv I won't get 1080p, only 720. So i'm wondering if I get a dvi to hdmi adapter will I get 1080p on the tv. Thanks.

DVI to HDMI is the way to go.

As others have said, use DVI to HDMI. I do it and 1080 works great on my plasma TV. Even regular DVDs are upconverted many times better than any upconvert DVD player I have ever owned (and I've tried three of them!). I bought my DVI to HDMI converter from newegg for $7. Gold plated. Works fantastic:

Oh yeah, if you want sound through the HDMI, you'll need to use the cable that came with your video card and connect it to your soundcard or motherboard. If I recall correctly, it's a 2 or 3 pin cable with tiny connectors. I can't remember exactly what its called though.

I'm not worried about sound to much. I guess I'll just use my motherboard sound to go to tv. I don't have anything that came with this card either haha. Its like 8 years old.

I thought I'd do the same thing but I couldn't. If you plan on running sound through your TV speakers, or from your TVs output to a stereo system, you might have an issue. My TV (and I'm pretty sure most TVs) won't allow you to have seperate video/sound inputs when using HDMI. In other words, if you select your TV/Video input source on your TV to HDMI, then the sound must come from the HDMI input.

If you have a seperate stereo that you pipe your TV sound to, you could connect your sound card output directly to the stereo and that should work ok. But I think connecting your video card to your mobo or sound card using the little cable for that purpose is by far the easiest way to go. You can buy the cable seperately too... I don't think they are anything fancy and should be pretty standardized. I just wish I could remember the name of it.... let me do some searching really quick and see what I can turn up.....

EDIT: Found it. It's called an SPDIF cable and its two pin. However it looks like there are several kinds of SPDIF cables out there and I couldn't find a two pin version on new egg so you may need to order one from nvidia or whatever. To see what it looks like, go to evga.com and search the knowledge base for article number 58021.

Whichever you choose, you're going to love it! In regard to the SPDIF cable, that may not be supported by your GPU.

OP.. with a 5200 you are not going to get 1080p playback without lag, you should be lucky to get 720p video without any problems. If you are buying a TV then you should be able to afford a newer video card. And as far as VGA connection goes, it really depends on the TV. Usually the VGA resolution is limited.

My LCD's that I have connected to computers via hdmi have a pc audio port on the HDMI 1 port (so you can use the 3.5mm plug for audio if you want).
