Default HTPC Disk Configuration

I have built my new HTPC and it seems to be running well. When I am recording multiple HD channels, though, the System Monitor I am using indications that my HDD is bottle necking.

I only have 1 disk for the entire HTPC, a 1TB 7200RPM

Would it be better to purchase a new drive and run the OS (this would also help with my windows 7 upgrade..) off of the drive and keep my SAGETV media folder on the 1TB?

Does anyone have another suggestion or should I just shut up and be happy? It seems to run well, but I want to take a load off and make sure the system runs well.

Thanks for the help

how much are you attempting to record? might want to look into at least a single WD black 640gb to record, and then transfer to a larger storage device. OR simply go raid for faster transfer. seeing as you have yet to fill out your sys specs, i dunno what mobo/controller your using.

1tb is nice, but how big is the cache? they make 10k + drives

Would past a screen shot? Any recent HD should be able handle at least 6 HDTV streams...

I have updated sys specs..

I use moo0 system monitor- the HDD seek number will hit 100+ and moo0 says it's the system bottleneck.

If it's not a big deal then I won't worry, but I thought it was a common idea that you should not mix storage with OS.

I don't need a large archive drive per se, mostly just to keep my current recordings, etc which goes up to 300 gb or so.

Thanks

You should be fine. I have a similar setup with one HDD partitioned for OS and Sage recordings. I can record 6 HD channels at once without any problems while also playing back a couple on my TV and Extender. I've had as many as 8 channels recording (mix of HD and SD) on a older 320GB WD HDD with an 8mb Cache. That was a drive seperate of the OS though.

maybe i'll partition. when i am recording two hd channels my os drags some. I know the processor isn't that great, but it seems like the drive is holding it back.

Thanks for the advice.

Drives are cheap enough now, get a separate drive for OS... or get a matching drive and raid-0 them.

I will.. especially before my OS grows out of control in size and it's easy to swap. Maybe I can preserve a backup of the vitals on the 1tb drive as well, or just keep it bootable..

Thank you for your help everyone
