Default Corel Windvd 2010. No sound through HDMI unless....

My setup:

I have a Gigabyte EP45 board with a 9800GTX+ with a SPDIF cable properly hooked up from the motherboard to the graphics card. On the back of the card I have a DVI to HDMI adapter, then an HDMI cable running to the TV. "Digital Output" is enabled in Realtek sound manager and computer speakers are disabled.

The problem:

I'm using Corel Windvd 2010. Every time I start a Blu-Ray or DVD, I have to go in the settings and switch it from SPDIF to "2 channel speakers" then and only then will I get sound through the HDMI cable to the TV.

Questions:

Isn't this exactly backwards of how it should work? What the heck could be wrong? If this is the only way it is going to work, is there a way to have Corel Windvd just to be "2 channel speakers" by default? I leave it at 2 channel speakers, then when I open it again, it's back to SPDIF.
