I use DVD shrink to rip to .iso, then the plugin Mymovies to play them.

You can also rip to video ts and media center will automaticaly add them to the movies folder.

I use Magic DVD Ripper.. it may cost money but it is very well worth it.. there are alternate methods of obtaining this software as well, which I will not go into
There is a full functional trial you can use to see if it suits you.

I put my DVD in, load this program up, click 'start' and it converts it to a .avi file for me, or another type if I choose.
I have set the output directory to my movies folder so it will automatically be in the correct folder when I use media browser in media center.

Media center wont steam vob files to the extender so this is what I do. I use 3 programs but it doesnt take long to do. First rip the Hdd to the hdd. Then I use DVD shrink to pull the movies out, you will lose the menus and extras, I go into preferences and and check dvd 9 and uncheck use 1GB blocks. This creates a large VOB file. I use video redo and do a quick stream fix on the VOB file converting it to .dvr-ms file. I google the dvd and download an image and save in the same directory as folder.jpg. Then start the MC extender and go to movies and it works great. The reason I unchecked break into 1GB file is because then you have to load all the VOB and merge together and this is much quicker. If you have anyDVD you can bypass ripping the Hdd and start with DVD shrink.
Once I have the Hdd ripped I can get 10-12 movies done within a hour. It takes some time but it comes out great.

Edit: After using DVD shrink you can take the large .VOB file and change the extension to .mpg but you don't get fast foward and reverse features like the dvr-ms file gives you.

Rip DVD files. Two pass encode them with ripbot264. Easiest thing since breathing.
