Default The philosophy of flashing bios

I've found conflicting information out there on this. Why, pray tell, is it so damn risky to flash your BIOS? I understand the implications of what may happen if it goes wrong. But why is it so risky to download updates to BIOS from a manufacturer website? Why souldn't periodically updating ANY system configuration with the latest improvements be an easy/encouraged process? The customer service guy from HP was all like "You should NEVER have to flash your BIOS". WHY NOT???

If the flash goes bad your mobo is junk. New high end mobos have dual bios so if one has a bad flash you can load into the other

in a simple phrase:
bad flash or error in the process = amazing technicolor paperweight

and unless you have a replaceable CMOS chip or sport a redundancy, you're outta luck.

OK, BIOS flashes are a good way to update the functionality of your mobo. Many times a mobo maker will add BIOS options and more HW support with BIOS updates. The reaon it is risky is that it is what the PC uses to communicate with all the components. Bad BIOS means nothing works and there is very little ou can do to fix a bad flash. (barring replacing the chip or doing a hot swap)

The only real issue is power failure in the middle of a flash. It is also said that yiou should never flash with software via the OS as there is a higher chance of corruption. Most mobo's have a built in utility to flash via the BIOS menu itself. I have done it many times with GFX cards and mobo's and never had a problem. It is just that it is one of the few things you can do to completely brick your PC.

Totally agree with dralb! Never flash in Windows.

When I do my flashing I plug my PC into a UPS, as mentioned above power issues are the main reason for bad flashes.

It's this simple. If it aint broke then don't fix it.If you need support for say a cpu,and your current bios doesn't support it,go to your mobo site and check the forums for the best flash b4 you do.Not all new bios are the best and can really screw things up.Thats why I allways check the forums and keep an extra bios chip on hand b4 a flash.
