Default mobo death?

I built a system for a friend last year and over the weekend he rebooted it and now he doesn't get POST/BIOS info on the screen anymore. He has power to all fans, lights, etc, but zero harddrive activity on either drive. Since the system is in Sacramento and I'm in Arizona, I'm trying to figure out what needs to be replaced...remotely. Since he has no POST, I'm thinking the mobo is dead, otherwise the drives would at least try to spin up. I've never had to deal with a dead mobo, so I need to lean on your experience and get your thoughts.

I'll answer the obvious questions that I already asked?

Have you moved the machine recently? Not in 6 months.
Can you hear the Raptor drive spin up? No.
What do you see on the monitor when you turn on the system? Nothing at all.
What does power on, when you push the button? The fans, lights, everything that is visible.

Mobo is ASUS P5K Deluxe Wi-Fi

More details on system build are here: http://www.overclock.net/case-mod-wo...0-mod-56k.html

Thanks for your help and insight!

Sounds like a dead motherboard.

But if you want you can play around by telling your friends to take all the parts out and put the minimum amount of parts. Then try each memory, and so on.

We have tried:

- unplugging PSU, resetting PSU for a couple of hours. No dice.

- reset CMOS. No dice.

There is not a speaker connected to the mobo, so my buddy is on his way to Radio Shack or Fry's to get one. Hopefully that will tell us something.

Any other ideas?

if the hard drives aren't even spinning then i would try a new PSU. even with a dead board the drives should still spin up, unless i'm reading your post wrong.

you could make a speaker out of any small powered speaker with some tape and a pair of snips.

Try removing everything from the Motherboard. Leave only the Ram, video card and set it on a nice ground. Cardboard works. Then see if you get a post with this. This includes removing the CPU to see if it will post while it is out. (FYI, it should)

you're lying to yourself and to the OP. a motherboard will NOT POST without a CPU.

Really? I didn't know that. It does makes sense, but I would think if nothing is prompting the head to move, the actuator has no reason to engage. The PSU is a Silencer PC&C 750 and everything is on a single rail so if the drives aren't running then I would think other components wouldn't be powered up either. I'll test the PSU though just to check it out. Good idea!

Thanks for the suggestion. I've never tried to power up a mobo without a CPU and I thought the mobo required the "resistors/transistors" in order to POST? I'll mention it to my buddy as an option. Thanks!
