Default broke the 4.0 barrior!

Hey guys! Im new to building/overclocking and i have been learning by reading about it and trial and error. Was hopeing to have some more experienced veteran oc'ers have a look at my bios and tell me any suggestions, advice, hints or changes that i should try.

I have been running at 3.99 stable for the last week or so and was tinkering around and actually got it to boot to windows @ 4.2 with memory running @1603 9-9-9-24. (have 12g corsair dominator rated @ 1600 8-8-8-24 2T)worked for like 10 minutes before bsod lol maybe i'll try that again when i get the V10 cooler on tuesday and see if the tec helps lol. anyways, enclosed are some picts. I think that i may drop it back down to 3.99 as going to 4.0 raised idle temps from 38.5 c to 41.5 c 3 degrees for .01 more speed and a bit more ram freq? doesnt seem right but idk..

I really need help with oc'ing ram and fsb. I went into ram timeing part of bios and changed the 8-8-8-24 to 7-7-7-20 and all seems fine but did I change anything? cool if i did lol. I'll run memtest tonight while i sleep.
But basically i watch the ram frequency change when i change the cpu clock.. I'd like to get it to 1600 with maybe a little bit tighter timings, but unless i run cpu at stock speed, i'm not sure how to do it..
Pointers are deffinately apprieciated!

And if i'm doing something wrong - let me know! I'm okay with critisism and this is a learning process for me.

Take a look at these screens and please comment.

thanks

If i were you i would not really overclock it to where idle temps are 40+C or pushing it to needing watercooling. I say at least a 1ghz overclock is good enough i don't think you can get a 2ghz overclock on air cooling.

The Bclk is only part of the ram settings. There are also memory dividers (check the options in "Dram Frequency") you can use to change the ram speed. I have a Xeon W3520 and therefore have most of the dividers locked.

do you mean the 'dram timing control' that takes me to the 4th screen shot in OP?

Yeah, agreed. I dont think I'm goint to keep it here at 4.00 unless i can get temps lower somehow. I am getting a V10 cpu cooler on tuesday, its tec/air hybrid so we'll see if that makes much diff.

but for my current setup, i'm happier with the 3.99 setting with 3 degree lower cpu temp.. That still seems crazy to me that .01 can change temps that drastically..

No, those are your primary ands sub timings. They can be tightened (will have to test for yourself) for better ram performance.

What I am refering to is the speed which you can change. It is labeled "Dram Frequency", and is one of the first few settings in the "Extreme Tweaker" screen. It is exactly 3 settings above the ram timing control. Just arrow up to it, then press + or - to chage the ram speed.

Thanks ericeod.

I think since i have it set to X.M.P. above that it automatically changes dram frequency (supposidly optimized) but i can definately change that to manual and try that out soon. but for tonight, I'm off to bed and its a few hours of memtest for the rig.

Talk to you guys tomorrow

memtest 4+ passes no errors
im off to work
cyall later

hey guys! I got some new stuff in the mail today
enclosed are some picts.
3 to 4 cooler temps at idle- i think this is mainly cause of the SHIN-ETSU X23-7783D thermal compound as the new cooler is only really supposed to make a bigger difference when cpu rev's up.
Much quieter now that I've lost a CM fan and the corsair memory cooler and replaced stock cooler fans with noctua's

Cooler Master V8 - contact area has been cleaned with Arctic silver thermal remover and surface purifier) i paid $70 +tax and a corsair airflow (2 fan model- the new one) ram cooler. along with some 120mm fans (never used) and a 140mm C.M. case fan, and a 230mm C.M. case fan.

The i7's in general have very high idle temps irrespective of clock speed.

My chip at 4ghz idles between 38-40c across the cores at only 1.216 vcore.
