Hi, I'm new to the board and need some help. You seem to have some good responses to other peoples problems so think mine should be a piece of cake.
__________________Recently my computer has developed a number of annoying problems. I think they must relate to my recently installing 2 sticks of 1 GB ram and/or a new 500 GB storage drive. The desktop has problems at start-up and shutdown. 1st) at start up there is a scan of IDE that it didn't use to do. It scans and tries to find 4 things and then move son. 2nd) there is some message about RAID. It also didn't use to do this. 3rd) I get a message that says "Overclock failed" and asks if I would like to press F1 and resume. It then starts up okay although it seems to be a bit slow. 4th) this is the really annoying part. Most of the time when I go to shutdown the computer it seems like it is shutting down properly and then at the last second when it is suppose to power off it restarts the computer. I can't figure why it does that. I've tried unplugging the new drive. That changed nothing. I tried removing the new RAM. That did nothing. I tried removing both and that did nothing. So I put the RAM back in and defaulted the bios by removing the battery. Still no change. Seems like I might need to change the speed of the new ram, but I don't know how to do this or what to change it to. PC also seems to be running very hot at times for no apparent reason. No big programs running, cool in the room, fans are running. My specs are 3.2 ghz processor, asus P5AD2 Premium, 4 GB ram. Any ideas or help you can provide would be much much appreciated. I took some cpu-z pics that might help. http://img268.imageshack.us/gal.php?g=cpuz1.jpg

This is my first attempt at helping, so I apologize if this is futile.
Did you change any of your jumper settings on the hard drives? If your main drive is Cable Select, perhaps put it on Master, with your new drive set to Slave. Regarding your RAM, if the two new chips are slower chips, then your two faster ones should "downgrade" to the speed of of the newer slower ones. If your two existing chips are slower than your two new ones, then the same should apply (i.e., the faster chips "downgrade" to the slower ones). Was your computer initially overclocked, and then the OC was lost?

I had a similar problem with my Asus P5ld2-vm. I set the PCI express frequency to 110 and upped my core voltage and it cured my problem.

I thought this was the way RAM worked too, that it would automatically run at the slowest speed, but maybe it didn't. I don't believe my computer was overclocked. How would I know? Also does it matter what order the ram is inserted. The old ram was in slot 1 and 3, so I put the new ram in 2 and 4. should I have put like ram next to like ram?

I removed the battery and went back to the default settings and it didn't help at all.

Do you know your ram specs? You may have to manually set the in the bios.

I believe I know the specs. What do I need to know and how do I change them? I imagine this is all in bios, but can't hurt to ask as I am new to this.

Remove the RAM and HDD then clear the CMOS and try again. If there is no problem then try adding the RAM and clearing again. If there is no problem, or even if there is a problem, remove the RAM then add the HDD and try again. Should help with narrowing down the issue. If the error still occurs with neither in then you might want to update your BIOS.\
Edit: ^^ Yes, RAM settings are in BIOS. Search around for your motherboard and you may be able to find a guide on the process. Otherwise search for RAM overclocking and you will find out some basics about RAM settings at least that will point you in the right direction. Also, post your computer information in you control panel (User CP) at the top of the page.
