After much debate on the new Conroe cored Xeon processors, I have decided to go ahead and build the system.:
__________________CPU: Xeon Conroe 3060, 4mb, 2.4ghz +327.99$ Mainboard:ASUS P5N32-SLI SE Deluxe Socket T (LGA 775) NVIDIA nForce4 SLI X16 +206.99 Memory:CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500)+364.99 Graphics:XFX PVT71JYHE9 GeForce 7950GT 512MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP ExTreme Edition +319.99 x2 = +639.98 HDD: Fujitzu 10k rpm 74gb hard drive (forgot price =/) PSU: Thermaltake toughpower W0105RU ATX12V/ EPS12V 700W +165.95 Total with tax and shipping = $1,998.11 Im planning on going with Liquid + TEC/Peltier cooling Lets see how this new Xeon conroe compares! ![]() Update: This system has been running stable for 2 weeks now without problems: I have the Xeon overclocked to 2.9ghz on stock cooling running @ 35C idle and 43C load. This thing seems to handle things just like e6600 C2D, except cooler. When I still had windows installed, the Xeon 3060 was comprable to the e6600 in 3dmark scores, but consistently ~.5 seconds faster than e6600's in super pi that were running at similar frequencies. All in all, I am very happy about this chip. Pics to come! Oh yeah, I will be writing a hardware review, where would I submit that? Update LONG in the making: (3-22-08) I finally got myself a good overclocking mobo and a good heatsink. XFX 780i Asus CoolSquare I lapped the CPU and heatsink and with the new mobo this thing rips. I have 3.4ghz stable and am currently working on 3.6+. I think im gonna need some better cooling =) So in short, Just thought I would say this first gen b2 stepped Xeon 3060 is still rippin!

You do know that the motherboard you picked is a lousy overclocker, right?
Also, threre is no information on motherboard for that CPU on the ASUS website, so I am not sure if, and with what BIOS, motherboards will support that CPU

CPU: Xeon Conroe 3060, 4mb, 2.4ghz +327.99$
Mainboard: Asus P5W DH Deluxe +249.99 Memory:CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500)+364.99 Graphics:XFX PVT71JYHE9 GeForce 7950GT 512MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP ExTreme Edition +319.99 x2 = +639.98 HDD: Western Digital Raptor WD740ADFD 74GB 10,000 RPM Serial ATA150 $149.99 PSU: PC Power & Cooling Silencer 610 EPS12V EPS12V 610W $159.99 Total: $1,892.93 + shipping Comments: I would run Crossfire instead of SLI... Changed PSU. Thermaltakes are not that good. The HDD you picked is likely SCSI. Unless you have a SCSI controller card, it's a no-go. Changed to RAptor What games you found that will need SLI under Linux?
