The DS3 does support RAID, on the secondary Gigabyte controller over the PCI bus.

Since he wants RAID, the Biostar is not an option

Actually, a better option is the ASUS P5B-E Socket T (LGA 775) Intel P965 Express for $150.99. That one allows for RAID over the Southbridge (ICH8R)
Ouch, yeah. Didn't see the fact he wanted RAID.

But in that case, like Chozart suggested, bump up to a ICH8R chipset. Better for RAID.

ICH8R is great for RAID. I've had two Raptors and two Perps and they both ran very fast in RAID0 with this chipset.

P5B-E better for RAID? I've never done RAID before, so I don't know much about RAID performance on different motherboards and such. And is bumping up to the P5B-E justifiable for the money? I guess I'm a little underbudget, so it's do-able, but is there a noticeable difference?

Yeah. But at least I can say I built it (along with the help of you awesome people). I'll probably be upgrading my own computer Summer 2007 once I get some money together. And I'm going to make sure my new computer beats this one.

I sort of agree. Why don't you give your sister your current computer, and get that new computer for yourself as a Christmas present?

EDIT: Either way, that computer looks good.

It works on the "non R" version of the chipset as well. It's just a drop in performance since you have to use the primary and secondary onboard RAID controller- and IIRC one is meant for E-SATA and the other is the "normal" SATA. I guess the speed would be a difference of about ~15MB/s, but unless she moves a lot of files constantly, un-raring/rarring constantly, etc, I don't really even think RAID is worth it. The difference really isn't much, but it does help.

I wish it was that easy. I actually asked her a month back if she wanted to buy my computer off me which would provide me with enough money to build a new one for myself. She insisted that my computer was too old. I told her that age has nothing to do with it and I had been simply "breaking it in" for her for the past year or so. No luck though.

But at least it's going to be fun building it.

Well she's really interested in video editing and production. She does a little bit of gaming too, but not much.
