New to Overclock.net

Hello, everyone. This will be my first foray into OC, and I want to do it right. My main purpose for this machine will be hosting several Virtual Machines, 64 and 32-bit. I also game a little, so I'd like to have a decent GPU. Mostly though I just want to build a *****in system. Here is the system I have spec'd so far. I've bolded what I consider to be the important pieces.
1 ASUS P5WD2 Premium Socket T (LGA 775) Intel 955X ATX Intel Motherboard - OEM Model #: P5WD2 Premium Item #: N82E16813131534R 1 BFG Tech BFGR76256GTOCE GeForce 7600GT 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card - Retail Model #: BFGR76256GTOCE Item #: N82E16814143049 1 Thermaltake Purepower W0129RU ATX12V 600 W Power Supply - Retail Model #: W0129RU Item #: N82E16817153042 1 CABLES TO GO 35555 Port Authority2 4-Ports VGA/USB and PS/2 KVM - Retail Model #: 35555 Item #: N82E16817810007 1 Intel Pentium D 805 Smithfield 2.66GHz LGA 775 Processor Model HH80551PE0672MN - OEM Model #: HH80551PE0672MN Item #: N82E16819116249 2 Patriot eXtreme Performance 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model PDC22G6400LLK - Retail Model #: PDC22G6400LLK Item #: N82E16820220144 4 Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 ST3250824AS 250GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM Model #: ST3250824AS Item #: N82E16822148111 1 Logitech MX3000 967553-0403 2-Tone USB + PS/2 RF Wireless Standard Desktop Mouse Included - Retail Model #: 967553-0403 Item #: N82E16823126175 1 ViewSonic X Series VX2035WM Black-Silver 20.1" 5ms DVI Widescreen LCD Monitor - Retail Model #: VX2035WM Item #: N82E16824116066 1 Thermaltake Armor LCS Model #VE2000BWS I plan to OC the D805 to 4GHz, maybe 4.1 depending on how it responds to voltage increases. Reviews of the memory say it's fast as hell when OCed. The mobo I chose based on an article from Tom's Hardware. The HDDs will be fast in a RAID10 array. I am willing to reconsider any and all components based on your recommendations. I would like to keep the total price under $2000, and I want to buy fairly soon (<30 days). Thanks everyone. |

I recommend these changes:
Motherboard: Asus P5B (119$) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131030 Processor: Core 2 Duo E6300 (190$) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115005 CPU cooler: TT cooling system (45$) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835106061 Power supply: Seasonic S12 500W (all you need)(125$) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817151024 With the above changes, your computer will be an order of magnitude faster and more overclockable than the 805D. 805D's suck enormous amounts of poer (90nm technology). Consequently, they require big iron heat dissipation. Besides, STOCK, the E6300 will run circles around a OC'd 805D. Also, the motherboard is an excellent overlclocker. The Seasonic powersupply is rated as one of the best. EDIT: Oh and ditch that video card if you can afford it. This Radeon is good: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814195029 If you want to future proof and run Vista then this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130082
