Default MY BEAST (pics) DDR2/DDR3

I've been waiting to build my C2D for ages now and I finally got everything in from NCIX last night. This is the system in my sig and I have to say that its does kick a lot of ass.

I was going to do a step-by step and take pics for each step but I quickly learned that my basement has some crap lighting so it wasn't even worth it.

System:
Core 2 Duo E6420 (batch 46G)
Gigabyte P35C-DS3R SSR2/DDR3
Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme + scythe fan in sig
Antec P182 case
Buffalo Firestix PC2-6400 2gb
Seagate 7200.10 320gb
Seasonic S12 Energy+ 650W ps
8800GTS 320

First I want to stress that this is my first time overclocking and first time building a PC. I don't really know how to structure this, so how about i post pics and explain as I go.

I got everything unpacked and here is the new P35 mobo with CPU and Ram installed. You can see that there are 6 ram slots and this is because this mb supports both DDR2 and DDR3.

Here is the rear ouputs of the mb, notice ther is no firewire but i'll get over it and it also comes with a bracket that fits into one the pci spaces for esata.

This is a pic that shows how massive the cooler is and I want to add that that scythe fan is whisper quite and still outputs 63cfm. good purchase.

The northbridge cooler is pretty massive. The cpu cooler does touch the northbrige one, but hardly, there is no pressure.

Again, another picture to accentuate how big the extreme is.

Installing everything in the Antec P182 was fairly easy and I cou'dn;t believe the build quality. It has very good cable management, which also make the whole installation a little more complicated. All I know is that I never want to plug another wire from the case to a motherboard again, they need to make those babies bigger!

A pic of the whole case, you can see that the wiring is clean (IMO) and I could not believe how big the 8800 series were it completely immasculated my old old 7600GT.

Last pic for now, but shows my system all hooked up. This is a beautiful case and when all the panels are on it is quiet as ****.

Sorry for the crap quality, but if my camera does not have direct sunlight as a light source it seems to crap out.

I installed XP Pro and everything went smoothly. Did the updates and installed the drivers, and now it was time for some OVERCLOCKING!

As i have said before I have never overclocked before but I read the guides and tips I have seen over the past few months and I got the hint. Pretty much turn off all the bullcrap options in the bios and then press CTRL+F1 to get the advanced options I want.

I set my divider to 2, didn't touch the motherboard voltages, or the memory and left the mem timing at stock which is 5-5-5-18. I upped the vCore to 1.375V and went away trying for a 2.7ghz overclock. no problem. 3ghz, same voltage, no problem, 3.2ghz, same voltage, no problem. 3.5 ghz, upped voltage to 1.4, no problem. 3.6, upped vcore to 1.5 for the heck of it, no problem.

At 3.7ghz I hit a bit of a wall. I didn;t want to up the vcore too much so i left it, i put up the fsb and whatever other mb voltages there were and upped the memory voltage. It posted into xp but it seemed my xp installation might have gotten corrupted from all the rebooting using the power switch so my anti-virus wasn;t laoding and CPU-Z wouldn;t load up. I thought this was because my cpu frequency was too high, but when I lowered it to default, it was still crapping out.

I didn;t get to validate or printscr the 3.7 so you have to take my word on it, or don;t, i don't really care. I reinstalled xp and everything worked fine, decided to get to 3.6 again without touching the voltages except for the vcore to 1.5 and validated it. Now I'm at 1.35V and 3.2ghz and I am going to leave it there so i don't damage anything. Memories are at stock voltage and I got the timings at 4-4-4-12 at 800mhz, good ram, only $119.00 CND.

I have to give props to this mb, I didn;t even have to play with tis voltages to get a good overclock.

So this is my rig for now, i'll try to get those speeds up again one day, but for now 3.2ghz is good for me.

Did you stress test it at all? 85C is a little warm. I don't know how much heat Intels can handle, but I'd watch that. Other than that, good job! Looks good

6 memory slots?

CPU-Z > About > Validation > Follow the instuctions

Also - You should keep it under 60c load for Intel. 85c is FAR TOO HIGH

What's the diff w/ P180 and P182?
I just saw a straight black P182 with mirror finish... I hate cases with no windows now, but MY GOD that thing is sexy!

Awesome build BTW!
