Default Friends Q6600 Build

Well... my friend is rich so he gets to get a new PC for his college going away. He asked me to build it so I'll get some money out of it myself

MOBO:

Optical Drive:

HDD:

Looking for a nice case. Not to flashy, i want to give him plenty of room to get SLi cards in the future. Good airflow, and professionalism look. Any suggestions? He could possibly get water cooling aswell.

Let me know what you think and what I should change for him. Hes hardcore CSS gamer.

Helps if you post what items instead of making us click each link

And first off they're going to say the OCZ PSU has "ripple" issues so go with a PC&P, but mine has done fine.

EVGA sure the hell is making a lot of money off that 680i. wonder if they're worth it.

Yeah, seriously, you could get 2GB for that much.

And get him at least 500GB since he's so rich. It's the best price/GB right now too.

Well i was thinking about it putting the 250GB's in raid 0.

so... idk.

also, he likes to OC. I heard cosair pc8500 was great for it.
dunno though ^_^

more suggestions please.

I also need to think of a case for him. He wants something non-flashy and very profession looking. Good airflow, and good space in case he ever wanted to go watercooling w/ sli.

^_^ he came to me for a reason, im not so sure he came to the right person so im double checking with all of you heheh!

Here are my thoughts on the build...
-----------
You have an ATI card and SLI is probably not the best way to spend your (his )money. SLI sounds great on paper, but it's generally a better idea to sell the current card on ebay and move up to the next gen of cards. You get about the same performance boost for the cost, don't need an nvidia board, and don't run into any compatibility issues with games. Therefore, instead of getting a 680i motherboard, go for an intel P35 chipset.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820144062
This board has much higher ratings, and the P35 chipset has better raid performance. (15$ saved)
------------
RAM, 1GB is definitely not enough... If you need to keep the price the same, here's the best option... Kill the raid and get the 500 gig drive that was linked in the thread, that frees up 40$. Then order 2x of the ram linked below. With the 15$ saved from the mobo, you should still be below what you originally linked. Now he has 4 gigs of (still very fast) RAM and a better mobo, and all that was lost is SLI support and RAID. You might ask if 4 gigs is too much...Well, if he's using a 32 bit OS, go with 2 gigs, but if he's using XP 64 or Vista 64, he will greatly benefit from 2 extra gigs of ram.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820144062

General RAID thoughts...He's going to college, and that means important work will be stored on his comp. RAID0 doubles the chance of a drive failure, and it's very hard (almost impossible) to recover data from a failed RAID0. I'm actually building a computer for college, and am using RAID, but for safety, I'm using 2x RAID0 arrays of 160gb drives, and keeping important files mirrored across both. To me that's a great option, but it's kind of complicated to build (although the ABIT mobo is said to have a nice manual), and is 80$ more than a 500gb drive (although you do get another 100gb of space).

If you go with 2 gigs of ram, or have some extra money to throw onto the rig, look into cooling for the CPU. The q6600 can easily overclock from 2.4 to 3.4 Ghz, but it needs some help in the cooling department.

I recommend a http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835154001
with some Arctic Silver 5 thermal compound.

The PSU is a great choice.

Why don't you just use raid 0+1 with 4 drives instead of 2 raid 0
