Default My "its about time" build

As you see from my sig rig, I'm a bit behind the times. Mostly this is due to the fact that college life is expensive, and homework takes precedence over real work. Nevertheless, it looks like I'll finally be able to afford a new build. I'm giving the shuttle to my parents to replace their dell, and I'm building myself this brand new dandy. Here's my specs:

Q6600 G0
8800 GTS 640/2900XT
P35C-DS3R
2Gb DDR2 800 Crucial Ballistix
CM 690 Case
Corsair HX 620W
Seagate 7200.10 320 SATA

I have already ordered, the case, PSU, and memory (I got sweet deals on them). Soon I'll be ordering the rest I'm excited about trying the new 690 case, I had been eyeing the Antec 900 for months, and at the last minute I found this beauty. Hopefully it works out well!

Also, I get the OS's for free, which is going to save me some serious money. I'm taking opinions on the video card, take in mind I'll be running windows and linux. I'll get pics up when my stuff starts arriving!

Have you decided on your video card yet? Because since you chose a P35 board (which only supports crossfire as far as I know) you could get a sweet dual 2900pro crossfire when they come out later this week... But a solid 8800GTX or GTS 640 would serve you just as well I guess...

No, I have definitely not decided on my video card, which is why I was curious about what people thought between the two with my current build.

I am building something very similar soon. (e2180 instead of q6600) And am trying to decide between those two video cards as well. So, I am going to bump the thread so maybe we can both get an answer.

Are you looking at the 2900XT 1GB or 512mb version?

I assumed the 512 version, as its prices are comparable with the 8800 GTS 640's. I know it's an endless debate between the 2900XT and the 8800 series, so it makes the decision difficult. I'll probably go ATI because my board supports crossfire.

As a side note, I ordered a tuniq tower 120 today slowly but surely this build will come together.

I'm WAAAAAY beyond the it's-about-time build due to the fact that I'm a teacher and my wife was in medical school and then residency. She's done now though so look out.

I would definitely recommend vista as your os. Get the retail version of home premium. Your build looks very good but on your list it says 8800gts/2900. If you do want to get the 2900, get the pro. It is priced very good but just wait until the pro comes onto newegg.

Just as an update, I pulled the trigger on the rest of my stuff. I'm currently eyeballing my PSU, Tuniq Tower, Ballistix, and new CM 690 case. Its all so beautiful and shiny... I had to change my pants when it all first showed up. I love the case, its relatively new so it hasn't really proven its true colors, but it sure looks like a great case to work with.

I also just (as in ten minutes ago) ordered a Q6600 G0 from ClubIT, and a 2900Pro along with some AS5 from the Egg. I'm really excited to see how the 2900 works out after some OCing. I was about to drop $390 on a 2900XT, untill this little gem came along at $270!

As for the OS, I'm using vista business, though I don't know if I should go 32bit or 64bit. I can get them both for free, I just don't know if it'l be worth the hasle of 64 bit just so I can add 2 more gigs down the road. Any thoughts? I'm building it all on friday with a buddy of mine, I can't wait!!

Also, I can get pics of anything if you guys want, and I'll be sure to take pics of the build!
