The thing about "hackintoshes" is that the operating system is built to work with only specific hardware that Apple decides to include, as opposed to all hardware in existence like Windows or Linux. The further you stray from that specific hardware, the harder it is to make it function correctly.

That said, there are more than likely patches, hacks or tweaks out nowadays for your specific hardware. Considering that you are licensed by Apple to do this sort of thing (otherwise, this would be illegal, wouldn't it?), you should have no problem finding the patches.

There is another, less dubious path you could take. You could compile Darwin (what OS X is based off of) yourself, then there would be no issues whatsoever with hardware or legalities.

As for your hardware question, I would suggest sticking closer to what Apple sticks in their computers. GMA X3100, Core2Duo, avoid the Asus P5B deluxe with WiFi, although the regular deluxe would probably work. Look up what's in the Macbook Pros for graphics cards (if you want to avoid the GMA X3100 onboard) and the new iMacs.

Here's some info on building a Hackintosh for under $800:

http://lifehacker.com/software/hack-...800-321913.php

They list all of their components, too. I'll list it here just for the hell of it:

Quote:
To make things easy, I've put together my entire hardware setup as a wish list on Newegg. (You may notice that the total price is listed at around $850, but I knocked $110 off the price tag due to a couple of mail-in rebates—so "Under $800" it remains, however fudgingly.)

The build consists of a 2.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, a total of 4GB of RAM (four sticks at 1GB each), an ASUS P5W DH Deluxe motherboard, a GeForce 7300GT (the same basic video card that comes installed in the default Mac Pro configuration), a 500GB hard drive, a DVD burner, and an Antec Sonata case (which I've always liked for its looks and quiet fans). The motherboard is the most important element, since the patches we'll apply later are tailored specifically for this motherboard. You could probably tweak a lot of the other hardware without many complications, but if you stick with this motherboard and follow the installation instructions, you shouldn't see any major complications.
Please note especially this part:

I don't know, but if I were you, I'd get the P5W DH Deluxe.

And the link to his wish list, which is also in the text above:

Here is a great forum to answer your questions.

Insanely MAC

From the reading I've done, there has been success runing the new Leopard OS with the 8800 series and the new ATI 2900 series GPUs. There are also posts claiming the 965/P35 and 680i/650i (only one CPU core at the moment for the NVIDIA chipset)are working.

The best 965 motherboard with the previous OSX was the Gigabyte board. This is probably the most popular too.

That pretty much sums it up. Also 965 is horrible for Tiger. Don't know much about leopard yet.
Also get a good sound card, not so hard to find most vendors support mac somehow.

As ericeod said, I'm sure there's ways to get it working with the 8800 series or 2900 series from Nvidia and ATI respectively. Good luck!
