Default build for a co-worker

He was looking into getting an alienware (so he has some coin to drop) but asked about building his own instead, so I threw this together for him as an alternate option.

Case
Mother Board
Graphics Card (2 of these)
Power Supply
Processor
Memory
Hard Drive
CD/DVD/Blu Ray Drive
CD/DVD Burner
Water Cooling

So what do you guys think? Overall cost is about $3000. Everything look good? Constructive criticism is greatly appreciated!

whats he gonna do with it? does he necessarily have to spend that much money. Why dont you blow him out with something like 2/3 the cost and make him a real happy camper? what do you think

I would wait out on the graphics card.... theres quite a few new models coming out that should revolutionize GFX cards, like the ATI 48x0 series. They will also be competitively priced against nVidia, so wait it out.

Might want to get 2 ATi cards or an SLi motherboard. Didn't your mother ever tell you to not buy 2 nvidia cards with an Intel chipset?

Harddrive won't work with that build, unless you get a SCSI adapter.

Get a WD VelociRaptor.

Because, besides Skulltrail, there is no Intel chipset that support SLI (they're Crossfire only).

Does he really need something that nice? Also I would go with raid 0 500Gb 7200.11's instead of getting the scsi.
As for powersupplies I like these:

I agree. I'd suggest something like a Q6600 or E8x00. Also, from what I've read, DDR3 is still pretty expensive for what you get. Switching to DDR2 ram will be way cheaper, plus you could save $100 and get a less expensive motherboard.

Additionally, Low Strife is right - you'd need a SCSI adaptor for the drive you've chosen, which is way overkill for a desktop build. SCSI drives are great for servers but you'll get much better bang for your buck by getting one of these WD 640gb drives.

Also, does he have a monitor already? If not, the savings from the hard drive, CPU, and ram/mobo could go toward a really nice Samsung 20+" LCD or something...or if he'd be ok skipping SLI, he could take the video card savings and get 2 nice monitors for a sweet dual monitor setup.

  • Case: I think for a build like this, the 900 is a bit small. Get the 1200.
  • MoBo: I don't recommend DDR3. Simply not worth the money. DFI LT is a nice board.
  • GPU: Wait for the new ATI cards. Going to perform really well and not excessively expensive. If you insist nVidia, get a 780i motherboard (or a 790i board if you insist on DDR3 for whatever reason).
  • PSU: coolmax? No thanks. Corsair has a very nice 1000W unit, as linked before.
  • CPU: Q6700 is the sweet spot in terms of price/performance
  • RAM: get 4GB of good DDR2 RAM
  • HDD: imcompatible indeed. Either some nice WD AAKS 320GB drives in RAID0 or a WD Velociraptor is a good choice.
  • Blu-Ray: why?
  • Watercooling: either go custom, or not at all. Plus, where are the blocks and such?

My picks:
  • Antec Twelve Hundred Black ATX Full Tower Computer Case $214.95
  • DFI LP LT X38-T2R LGA 775 Intel X38 ATX Intel Motherboard $239.99
  • CORSAIR CMPSU-1000HX 1000W ATX12V 2.2 / EPS12V 2.91 Power Supply $269.99
  • Intel Core 2 Quad Q6700 Kentsfield 2.66GHz LGA 775 95W Quad-Core Processor Model BX80562Q6700 $274.99
  • G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F2-8500CL5D-4GBPK $124.99
  • Western Digital VelociRaptor WD3000GLFS 300GB 10000 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive $299.99
  • LITE-ON 20X DVD±R DVD Burner With 12X DVD-RAM Write Black SATA Model LH-20A1S $30.99
  • LITE-ON Black SATA Blu-ray DVD-ROM Drive Model DH-4O1S-08 $139.99
  • Tuniq Tower 120 P4 & K8 CPU Cooler $49.99
Subtotal: $1,645.87

That leaves plenty money for a pair of the new 4870's from ATI
