Default New build - Maybe I pulled the trigger too soon...

...but then again with time the prices fall and specs rise. I'm thinking mainly about the GPU and CPU releases.

I would appreciate your input on a new build as I have yet to select all components. I'm building my first system and so far have used the egg for all the components.

This seems to be a form of gambling because I got burned on the memory (one day later a $10 price drop and a $30 m.i.r. from OCZ not valid for my purchase). I was able to talk egg into giving me a $20 credit in the PSU drop that happened 2 days after I ordered it. They offer no price guarantee and said it would be a one time adjustment.

I will air cool this system. I got a great combo deal on the case so it helped me make that difficult decision. I realize there are many options for the case but I'm going with the Cosmos S (too bad it's not a Cosmo K, JK).

I went with the nicely priced E8400 for the overclocking as I don't perceive the "need" for quad core. I usually don't buy the latest and greatest game and wait till they hit $19.99 or below.

This rig is mainly going to serve as my racing sim machine. The titles are GTR2, GT Legends, rFactor, and Race07. I also dabble in the BF2 FH2 mod.

I want to max everything including AA on these titles if possible.

Here is the list of things, some I have, others in shipping and some undecided.

CPU - Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 (shipping)
MBoard - EVGA NVIDIA nForce 790i Ultra (new in box)
Memory - OCZ Reaper HPC 4GB DDR3 1333 (new in box)
GPU - ???
HDD - Samsung Spinpoint F1 (have not ordered)
Sound - ???
Speakers - ???
PSU - COOLMAX CUQ-1200B 1200W (new in box)
Case - COOLER MASTER cosmos s (shipping)
CPU cool - ? maybe Thermaltake CL-P0464 80mm if it clears memory http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835106114
GPU cool - ?
OS - Vista 64bit (have not ordered)
Monitor -Dell UltraSharp 2408WFP

I may have bought too much PSU and payed too much for the memory, ha like that time in Bangkok, but I can still look myself in the mirror so far.

The main question is GPU, 8800GT, GTS, GTX, 9 series, SLI. I don't think I want the GX2 so I'm thinking probably 2x8800. What do you think?

Thanks for your input.

Cheers

Mobo You could save some cash and get a 750i or even a 650i instead.
Memory Get a 2x2GB set of G.Skill, OCZ, or Corsair DDR2, if you haven't already bought the DDR3. There's no huge advantage to DDR3 for the price you pay.
PSU Haven't heard of it but DAMN that's alot of watts. Someone else may be able to tell you if it's a decent make.
Case You'll be very happy with the Cosmos S. I have one, and my roomate has built 3 other computers with them because they provide such great airflow and space for not alot of money. Very durable as well.
GPU Other's may say to hold out for this card or that card, but I don't think you'll need to. The game's you'll be wanting to play aren't very demanding so a single 8800 GTS will probably suit you fine. Although at the resolution of your 24" monitor, I'm not entirely certain. IF need be, get a second. I'd choose the dual 8800 GTS 512 as it's the best price/performance and gives you better performance over 8800 GT for a small price difference.

i would not get a dell monitor yes they might be really nice. but you can get some thing better for less money.

hey if you got a good deal for the 1200w then why not. i say its good to go a little over board because then you know you won't have to worry about if you have enough psu w to handle your stuff.

Sound - Onboard sound isn't that bad. What else do you plan on using it for other than gaming? You can always add in a soundcard if you're not impressed with the onboard. I'd say as is for now. It does have 7.1 sound (blueray hd)
Speakers- Are you looking for surround sound, watching blueray? To get the most, I'd say a 7.1 speaker system (I Haven't seen any for PC yet) IE 2 rear speakers, 2 side, 2 front, 1 center, and 1 sub (the .1) The Logitech Z-5500 are very good IMOhttp://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16836121120 But it all depends on your budget.

Video cards, it all depends on the Budget. I definately would not go for the 280 gtx yet. You should be fine with an 8800 GTS (G92) at 1920 X 1200, especially with just playing older games

get a GTX280 or wait for the GTX260. a new build should have a truly next gen graphics card.
edit: and get a Q6600 or a Q9450. quads are the future. nvmind, you ordered your cpu already.

I think that Build thread is bad, people don't realise that just because e2xxx series clock up high and get good super pi's that they aren't actually that good. Check out toms hardware for the chart, a cheap AMD kicks an e2xxx in the face, definitely spend more and get a quality CPU from Intel.

he ordered a e8400 already, so why bother mentioning it? the e8400 is a great cpu. btw, a 2.4ghz e2220 (thats the stock speed) should beat ANY AMD dualcore brisbane (the ones with only 1mb cache) you would need a 2mb cache x2 (right now the only ones they make are the 6000+ and 6400+) to beat it, and the e2220 is $90, those cost much more. but this is off topic. he got the e8400. end of story.

I'm sorry but no, yes it may be off topic...Sorry but don't try and shut me off like that as you will see in real world performance the e2xxx series is no where near what it's hyped to be http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/c...2C1309%2C1316#
