Default $1800 build...2k is like...non existant

Ok guys, got word from mum that I can spend a max of $1800. So...be happy. I'm too frustrated to figure this one out. But, I want at least a 9800GTX if not a 9800GX2 and a velociraptor. So....go nuts!

MoBo: EVGA 750i FTW
RAM: Corsair Dominator DDR2 1066
HDD: Velociraptor 300GB
Vid Card: ??

If you are on a budget, get a couple Radeon HD 4850's and Crossfire them, you'd get great performance. For a hard drive, go with Western Digital's 640GB hard drives; really great performers. Velocirapaptors are almost unnecessary for a budget build. And why buy 9800GTX's if you can buy better performance with the Radeon HD 4850 for the same price?

Spoiled because he's getting a computer? I'm pretty sure most kids have computers these days...someone sounds jealous?

e8400 - $190
Biostar IP45 - $130
2x2gb Gskill - $110

2xHIS 4850 - $200x2 = $400
Velociraptor $300
Corsair 750w $130
The rest is left for case/fans/optical

Even at that I'm only at 1300...i'll take another go at it later

If you've been reading the boards, nVidia isn't the greatest option at the moment. But its your computer. Wait for the 9800GTX+ comes out before you decide. The regular 9800GTX should drop even further.

This might change y'alls decision about part selections. I'm going to be gaming on this new box AS WELL AS rendering and some pretty heavy level design. Also, I'm on a deadline. I want to get this PC by mid July, which gives me two weeks from tomm. Reason? QuakeCon.

Ok.. cleanup done. Thanks for the helpful posts.

He asks for suggestions. He says he's frustrated. What do we do as fellow OCN members? We help him.

Thanks

My picks (ATI is by far the best choice in this case):
  • LITE-ON 20X DVD±R DVD Burner Black SATA Model iHAS120-04 - OEM $23.99
  • Thermaltake Armor+MX VH8000BWS Black Aluminum / Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case - Retail $134.99
  • Western Digital VelociRaptor WD3000GLFS 300GB 10000 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM $299.99
  • VisionTek 900244 Radeon HD 4870 512MB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card - Retail $619.98
  • ($309.99 each)
  • CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX 750W ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply - Retail $129.99
  • G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F2-8500CL5D-4GBPK - Retail $109.99
  • DFI LANPARTY DK X38-T2R LGA 775 Intel X38 ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail $184.99
  • Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Wolfdale 3.0GHz LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor Model BX80570E8400 - Retail $189.99
  • OCZ OCZTVEND2 120mm Rifle CPU Cooler - Retail $49.99
Subtotal: $1,743.90
Shipping: $46.44

Grand Total: $1,790.34

If you insist on nVidia (for whatever reason... brand loyalty isn't always a good thing), replace the mobo and GPU's with these:
  • EVGA 123-YW-E175-A1 LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 750i FTW SLI ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail $189.99
  • MSI N260GTX-T2D896 OC GeForce GTX 260 896MB 448-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Retail $599.98
  • ($299.99 each)

Drops the price even by $20

I would not get the 9800GTX... the GTX 260 is actually becoming affordable, and is the better card.

EDIT: Seen your previous post. Since I do want to keep the SLI/Crossfire (let me know if it's nVidia or ATI in your final choice... ), I strongly recommend to drop the Raptor. It's simply not worth $300.
