I'm thinking of perhaps building a system in a couple weeks. Current hardware thoughts are:


NEW Build thoughts.

CPU
Q6600

RAM
2x 2x2GB Gskill F2-8500CL5D-4GBPK $210 total.

PSU
Antec TPQ 850 or Corsair 750TX. $100/140.

Heatsink
XIGMATEK HDT-S1283 120mm Rifle / XIGMATEK ACK-I7751 Retention Bracket /Ultra Kaze 120mm Fan. $44 total.

DVD Drive

Motherboard
DFI LANPARTY DK X38-T2R $180

Now I'm still lost somewhat on which motherboard to get I like the x38 ones but in almost all possibility I won't crossfire so $220 for a good x38 would be excessive.
I looked at the DFI LANPARTY DK X38-T2R which is $180 however people were complaining about not having direct cpu voltage control. Anyone know about this? I was also looking at the EP45s from Gigabyte however they've had mixed overclocking reviews.

I'm also slightly worried about the xigmatek fitting in most motherboards because from pictures it looks like it might cramp against the ram banks. Anyways motherboard suggestions would be nice / any changes to what I've listed.

You could grab a 4850, which is definately a budget card with not budget performance. =)

Other than that, everything looks pretty decent.

You will like that board, you will like that ram (whichever you get, they are both good stuff). I'd say, after you do this build though, save up for a good LCD. CRT just doesn't provide the same experience that LCD does. Get yourself a 20-22" Samsung or something, and enjoy. I'm saving for a 30" right now

I'd go with the Arctic Cooler Pro if you decide to go with the E8400 (more gaming oriented) and the Tuniq if you go with the quad. In your case, I'd definately look into the quad. And considering that its basically cheaper than the E8400 (usually) you will probably have more use for it.

Definately a quad for that, i really doubt you'll notice the liek 1-2 fps in gaming. Also I would just get the ddr2 800 for the price difference. Also the gt is good for that resolution I think

Not a must have but its quite possible that more games will eventually support PhysX. That aside though would a 4850 work without a hitch with that PSU and either cpu combo?

There is not enough games that would warrant physx support has the end decision when it comes to your video card. I would suggest a 4850 for you card, the Q6600 for you CPU, For the ram, you are better off with the DDR2 6400. The board is good for what you want, the PSU will cover you now and in the future.

It is an all around decent build, will serve you well.

Q6600 or E8400.

IMO the decision between qaud core and dual core is simple, if your planning on upgrading computers in LESS than 2 years go with the dual core. If your going to have it more than 2 years go qaud core. In 2 years if u dont have quad core even in games you will have a obsolete system. ^_^

- Ram

OCZ Reaper 2x2GB DDR2 1066 or DDR2 800. Tad bit of price difference between the two.

Go with a 1066 so you can get a easy 1:1 clock IMO its worth going the extra mile, i would go with the dominator kit its cheap and is known to perform well heres a link for ya

- Video Card

I was thinking either BFG's 8800 GT OC2 or EVGA's double slot cooler edition.

DEFINITLY go with a 4850 or a 4870 at 200 or 300 bucks respectively pick whichever one you can afford but they take the cake with ease on the price/performance ratio especialy for a build like yours.

- CPU Cooler

Tuniq 120 or Arctic 7.

Go with the tuniq the artic is a much inferior cooler its worth doing a mod or 2 on the case to get it in.

- Hard Drive

Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST3500320AS 500GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM

Get it. In a year when your going to need the extra hd space your not going to want to deal with tranfering everything to the new hd.

Just out of curiosity as I'm going to see if I can squeeze out a bit more money soon and maybe adjust a bit if I can. How much power does a crossfire/SLI setup tend to draw for 4850/4870 8800gt/9800gtx/GTX260.

Are X38/48 boards worth looking at all? One thing was curious about if I ever did go with an X board was that they don't show support for DDR2 1066, only 800 and DDR3. Did they just miss it or are they not capable of running it without ocing?


I plan on keeping the system for a good couple years, maybe 3+ so most likely going to go for the quad with changing out video cards, the other day I was thinking about the Q9300 but it didn't seem to be too worth it. $70 more and the voltage sensitivity with the 45nm would worry me a bit.
