Storage most likely.
These motherboards are perfect for leaving on 24/7 to use as a file server since their power consumption is quite low. Could be lower though (Rant to Intel: if they didn't use a 3 year old chipset), but we all know that.

thanks,
another question: is it true that AMD sempron motherboards us less power then the atom motherboard? Wich one? Are there other atom motherboards then the D945GCLF?

Well, the Athlon 64 2000+ (1GHz at 0.9v) paired with a AMD780 chipset consumes less power than the whole atom mobo itself, the CPU still consumes more than the Atom 230, it's 8w for the 2000+ versus the 4w of the 230, but the 780G consumes less than the D945, nearly half IIRC. But the downside is that pairing the 2000+ and a mITX AMD mobo is more than twice the price, doesn't make up for the around 5w less consumption. It also can outperform the 230 in some aspects.
EDIT: It also has the same core as the Athlon 1640b @ 2.7GHz, in theory you could use one and downclock it to match the 2000+ (Both "Lima Core) There is another Atom motherboard that I am aware of, its basically the same but it has an Atom 330 which is a dual core version of the 230, exactly same clock frequency. But it also consumes a bit more since its a dual core, its model is the D945GCLF2. You have Celeron 220 based mITX motherboards that perform similarly to the Atom motherboards. For a file server, imho, it would be a waste of money to buy a dual core version. EDIT: Just found this

Have to ask this - 500GB seems excessive, unless it's a media server, in which case i apologise.
__________________What is the intention of the sever? The Atom is a good choice, i have to say, the VIA C3 is getting on a bit, and is a little on the pricy side. But you dont need a lot of processing power in a server, as any output is going to be capped to 100mb/s on a LAN and about 8mb/s for WAN. Also, by the same token, you probably don't need a 16mb cache, 8 would probably do.

he's going to use it to store movies, pictures, music, games, ...
He wants to acces the server everywhere. He wants 1TB storage. He's going to upgrade it later. He's going to let it open 7/24.

In which case, simply include the largest hard disks possible. Any Server-Side scripts going to be running?

How about the Via C7 Nano? Very low power consumption, and I've heard it outperforms the Atom.
