he wants a streaming/home server, i've chosen these parts:

antec basiqpower 350W
thermaltake mozart case (still not sure about the case. DVD-ROM/RW is not recommended, he can use USB-DVD-RW stations too)
GigaByte GA-EG31M-S2 (or should i take: GigaByte G31M-S2L, i don't see a big difference, but maybe you do)
Core 2 duo E7200
sony NEC DVD-RW drive
WD GP 1TB (is there a difference for streaming HD when i take a WD caviar blue that's faster?)
GeiL 2 GB DDR2-800 Kit

what do you guys think? please help me, his patience is going down.

Stream videos with it? You mean he wants to watch the videos on the server or watch them on other computers over the network?

For a file server, your build is overkill.

This will work fine for your basis:
Intel Atom 330 (Dual-Core) + 1Gb LAN http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813121359 ( I know no Newegg but look for this)

Why is a DVD drive needed for a server?

The Green/GP is fine as your network will probably be the bottleneck.

Your friend will just use the server to stream HD content? Theres a difference in playing the HD content on the computer and use it as a server to stream to another computer. Those specs are a bit overkill for a streaming server. But from the case you are using (HTPC case) is your friend going to use it as media center as well file/streaming server?

You can get an AMD build that will most likely be cheaper, based on AMD780 chipset with HD3xxx series on board that can decode 1080p content, pair that with a cheap Athlon X2 and you would do good.

If the rigs purpose is just to stream videos and share files, an atom based motherboard would be more than enough, those can also decode 720p with no issues.

So an atom 230 is enough for just streaming 1080p to a media extender?( and using it as a file server too)

I think my explanation on my previous post was a bit confusing, sorry.

The Atom CPU cannot decode 1080p, that may also apply to streaming, as you also need the CPU to decode the video (Considering network streaming to another computer using WMP). Streaming to the media center extender may be diffrent.

But why use a media center extender (Xbox 360?)? Your friend would have less hastle using the server itself to play the media. Also note that streaming 1080p through 100Mbit interface may cause performance issues. I would test that out myself, but my TV is only 720p/1080i. I've seen the same question on another forum and there was no answer, but, I still keep my advice to get a cheap m-ATX motherboard based on AMD 780 chipset, and a low power Athlon X2 with a couple gigs of RAM, you can take for granted a smooth 1080p playback.

i don't know how he's going to do it exactly, bit i think he said that the server is going to be a bit far and in another room then the tv that supports 1080p, he's going to use a ps3 as media center extender. now, is this build better? I don't think he's going to use wireless. He's going to use a fast wired connection, i don't think that there's a problem with that for 1080p.( i think it's 300Mbps). I'm searching weeks for the answer and he's keeping asking me why i still didn't find an answer yet. please help and thanks for helping me.
EDIT: is there a difference between socket AM2/AM2+ if i take a AM2 processor?

That looks like a solid build, one thing though, don't overclock the CPU without putting some mosfet coolers, in the photos I saw of that motherboard, they are bare.

The following contradicts the previous sentence lol
If you want to save up a little more energy on that system, the 5000+ has a TDP of 65w, you may get a chunk out if you get that to 2GHz or lower and drop its voltage along the way, if that motherboard allows you to do so, that will also keep the mosfets cooler, one thing if you do so, just drop the multi

The Greenpower WD HDD is enough, you'll be limited to the network connection speed. You might want to consider another smaller HDD to fit in the OS (80GB is more than enough), I usually recommend that to everyone I help out building new systems, to keep the data separate from the OS in case something goes wrong.

How well do those processors perform for the mini atx type boards? Could those run a small gaming server off them?
