The total effective VRAM on CFX'd 4870X2s is still only 1GB no matter how you cut it.

They seem to be solid memories, their specification is exactly like the Corsair I chose.
I'll contact their resellers to see if it's available.

The Radeon HD 4870 X2 has 2GB ram which means each GPU is using 1GB with 256-bit memory interface.
The Geforce GTX 280 has 1GB ram with 512-bit memory interface.
I think 3x1GB @ 512-bit would be better than 4x1GB @ 256-bit.
Correct me if I'm wrong..?!

I also searched for some benchmarks, and in most of the tests GTX 280 3-way SLI outperformed the 4870 X2 xFire @ 2560x1600.

get this mobo:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...=rampage%20x58

It supports sli/tri-sli as well as crossfire.
this is probably the best x58 board out to date, besides the dfi blood iron which is coming out soon
I don't see any advantage in this board over the EVGA X58 SLI, Rapmage II Extreme is just more sexy!

The 4870 has the same effective bandwidth because its VRAM is quad pumped whereas the GTX 280 is only double pumped. ATI went with GDDR5 and a 256-bit bus to save on power.

In multi-GPU setups, the VRAM is shared among the GPUs. Just like a pair of 4870 1GB cards would only have 1GB effective VRAM, a single 4870X2 and pair of 4870X2s effectively have 1GB of VRAM.

The only possible advantage I could see to having two 4870X2s is all four GPUs would be on a PCI-e 2.0 x16 bus. But I heard EVGA is releasing a motherboard that will have enough lanes to support x16/x16/x16 tri-SLI. What difference will this make in performance? I'm not sure, but it should mean a slightly more expensive power bill.

Beating it by a few percent in some games is not what I'd call a can of anything. That said, either setup is great. Seriously, let's not start this argument in this thread. There are 100s of threads for that already in existence. Both setups rock, choose whichever you like and move on. In a year both will be meaningless anyway.

I wouldn't say they would be meaningless. They will still be top-of-the-line solutions, just not the absolute best available. Either setup would be good for no less than three years.
