Default dorm room i7 workstation build...

Hey I'm building a new computer and would like to know if this sounds alright for me.. I don't do much gaming (maybe like Simcity once a year..) and will be doing mainly CAD, adobe software(most programs in the cs4 master collection), music production, and 3d work.. I do plan to do a slight(relatively) overclock to 3.0ghz to speed up rendering a bit

Parts I'm buying/bought for the build):
- Intel i7 920 (stock cooler)
- Asus P6T-Deluxe motherboard
- 9 GB Corsair 1333 MHZ XMS3(the extra 6gb was an afterthought..)
- PC Power & Cooling 610W power supply
- Seagate 1 TB drive
- Seagate 1.5 TB drive(afterthought...)
- PNY Quadro FX1700 graphics card

Parts I already have and will put on
- WD 150gb raptor
- Viewsonic monitor
- Vista Ultimate
- DVD drive, card reader etc..

So how does it sound? Will the stock cooler be able to handle 3.0GHz?

Thanks

That should do CAD pretty damn well :P

Stock cooler will handle 3.0Ghz ( as long as you dont use too much voltage), but it might get warm.

PLEASE don't use the stock cooler. Get even a cheap aftermarket cooler, and it will perform far better.

For what you would be doing,I think a p35 or p45,q66 and 4+GB's of 1066 ram would be just as good and cheaper. And make sure to go with the 64-bit OS to take advantage of the extra ram.The rest looks good to me,and your current suggestion will do just fine.

Overall the build looks sweet, but I tried overclocking on my i7 920 on stock and it was pushing 3Ghz, but the stock cooling was struggling to keep temps low. It would be best for you to grab an aftermarket cooler.

Thanks a lot for the replies

I also multitask a lot with tons of programs and tabs in Firefox.. That's one reason I have so much ram (I'm also going to install the 64 bit Vista).. The processor is for rendering because I need the fastest processor under $500...

I guess I'll save up for a TRUE.. Is it a quiet heat sink and fan setup? Would it be practical to replace the stock fan with a Scythe fan? Since I'm in a dorm room with a roommate I want to keep the noise as low as possible.. I'll just wait until I get the heat sink before overclocking it...

The TRUE is pretty quiet I don't hear it at all, mind you I have an Antec 1200 and I leave all the fans on high speed.

I found a wicked deal tonight on a brand new still in the box cooler master 690 case for $40... I'll be picking it up tomorrow .. I can't wait! Now I just need find a good deal on a new or used TRUE and some scythe fans... I need the quiet fans because I'm in a kinda small dorm room (freshman dorm...) with my roommate and plan on leaving the computer on overnight quite a bit..
