Depends how much disposable income you have... if two grand is something you can throw around easily, then yeah, go for the i7.

If this is a once a year deal, or even a little more often, then I wouldn't upgrade to an i7 940 over the Q9650. (According to benchmarks and reports from i7 owners - I have never actually used an i7 myself)

Post your current system specs?

Edit: And whoops.. are you talking about $2,000 AUS? That would change the build quite a bit.

price really isnt a concern man as i could go $3000 if i wanted to but thats a bit high.. Was thinking mayb keep this rig for a year or two.. You said the i7 performs better when it comes to gaming which im happy about as i game alot, as for multi-tasking im pretty sure the i7 would be around the same if not a tad bit faster? Im currently running a Q9650 P45,4 gig ram.. But thats all going to my mum as she needs a pc for her home office..

^^ Thats what i would go with but if you want cut down to a normal P6T and a 920 as the 940 is not worth it.

Here is the 920 $70 cheaper: http://www.microcenter.com/single_pr...uct_id=0300438

Well, if you want to really pour some cash into a killer system (Tri/Quad SLI, heavy duty i7) then sell your current rig (which sounds very powerful), build your mother a budget system for home office use (don't really need much at all - trust me) and add the leftover to what you want to spend.

Could drop $4000 if you wanted on a beast of a system.

MSY has the Q9650 for $550. A steal in my opinion.

The i7's game fine, worth a step in that direction.
