I have a 5530 and it uses .95v at stock 2.4, so they run cooler. speedstep also helps bring the temps down. I havent played with it much, but silence wont be hard to achieve since the tdp is only 80w versus the 920's 130w.

If anybody knows of a good looking dual-socket board, let me know! They all are ugly buttcrack server boards right now, hopefully some enthusiast boards will make it out. Cause I wanted dual oced' xeon i7s with sli . luckily it works fine in regular boards

the voltmodding duckieho suggested is an awesome way to make fans silent too! makes vantec tornados bearable! And free compared to fan controllers

Also, afaik the ram doesnt have to be ecc... but its late so dont quote me on that unless someone else verifies!

Glad to hear it will work in an x58 board. From my Xeon Conroe build a while ago (that I am using right now) I have no doubt that it will run without ECC ram.

Well, maybe one. The only problem I could see would be that the memory controller is on the CPU itself.

The E5530 is tempting too, and it's only 20w tdp higher.

Actually I know it doesnt need ecc since I used it on a regular x58 board with run of the mill triple channel 6gb ram Lol

for overclocking, the limiting factor is the multiplier since some motherbaords wont do a bclk much over 200 (stock is 133). the 5530 has a 18x multi so 3.6ghz, when I've looked around - 220'ish seems the reasonable top limit...

I have reworked the potential item list with a picture! (oooh fancy!)

Unfortunately it looks like it might hit the wallet harder than before. I will have to sell my other systems

looks good, but I would get a psu with 120mm fan, and replace it with a low dba fan and maybe vmod it .

quiet fans + sound dampening makes silence. mobo is good, might want to look around though.there are cheaper dual-core xeon variants for i7 which are far cheaper too :P

Update: 5-24-09

New parts for the build. I would like some input on whether or not to use the HD4770 with the accelero s1 or the stock Gigabyte HD4850 with the passive cooling. Also, I would like some heatsink suggestions. Under 4" in height is optimal, but up to 5.5" could possibly work.

HD4770's have less power requirement, less heat than 4850, would strongly recommend 4770

That is true, now it is all about trying to find them in stock Besides, on the Arctic cooling website the Accelero s1 is recommended for use with cards up to the 4870 (probably with active cooling) so passive on a 4770 seems like it would be ok.

Now as far as CPU cooling goes, there are two silverstone coolers that I am looking at.
SILVERSTONE NT06-LITE
SILVERSTONE NT06-E

Any ideas? they look about the same
