Hey Guys, First time poster and looooong time lurker.... I am upgrading from my o/c Q6600 (at 3.0Ghz) Workstation/Game box because, well, its just that time...
__________________ [sidenote] I thought about taking the Dual Xeon [Nehalem] route but I don't have a lot of cash to blow and the way I figure it, I can overclock the 920 to somewhere around 3.8Ghz and gain a huge improvement over the current Q6600. Take a look at the apps I use most and let me know if you think I've picked the right parts for it... Work: HyperShot (Renderings), HyperMove (animations), Maxwell Render (Uber-renderings) and SolidWorks(CAD) (Note: HyperMove is a switch-hitter that can render from GPU almost as well as it can render from CPU. Currently I use a 8800GTS (640m) and it does very well... Play: Crysis, Left4Dead, generally FPS's ------------------------Ok Here it goes------------------------ MotherBoard: ASUS P6T Deluxe V2 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131365 CPU: Intel Core i7 920 Nehalem [D0 Stepping] http://www.ncixus.com/products/38881/BX80601920%20-%20D0/Intel/ Memory: (6Gig Total) CORSAIR DOMINATOR 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145224 Graphics: EVGA 01G-P3-1182-AR GeForce GTX 285 FTW Edition 1GB EVGA GeForce GTX 275 1792MB http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130476 Power Supply: CORSAIR CMPSU-850TX 850W http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139009 Drives: [2 via Raid0] Western Digital Caviar Black WD6401AALS 640GB http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136319 Case: COOLER MASTER Storm Sniper COOLER MASTER COSMOS 1000 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119138 CPU Cooler: CoolerMaster V8 Noctua NH-U12P SE1366 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-U12P%20SE1366 Sound: HT OMEGA STRIKER 7.1 Channels 24-bit 96KHz http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16829271001 Display ( dual): (2) x ASUS MK241H Black 24" 2ms HDMI Widescreen LCD Monitor with 1.3M Pixel Webcam http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824236033 ------------------------Feedback more than welcome------------------------

Great Machine, Should destroy anything you throw at it. A suggestion you may wanna take is to go EVGA X58 instead of the Asus board. Asus is good, however i have only heard great things about the EVGA board.

All boards have their weaknesses, the ASUS i7 boards are badass and I think any ASUS X58 board owner will agree. I get tired of every person suggesting the EVGA board like its something amazingly better than the other i7 boards out there. I believe the EVGA still has that crappy raid controller on their i7 boards. (nevermind, they are running the intel one now )Not much to change OP unless you are on a budget, those parts will work well although personally I'd invest in a better CPU cooler. P.S. Not bashing you encore018, you just happen to be the one this time.

Looks almost identical to the parts I just ordered this week.

Yeah I have no beef with EVGA - love their video hardware (and their warranties). Asus is just a name I know well but it is going to boil down to best bang for the buck. Which Evga are you pitting against the P6T Deluxe V2 and what does advantages does it offer?

Also, I opted for the V8 based on 5-egg rating and the CM name. Reviews on that cooler seem to vary. I had originally hoped to put a TRUE in (instead of the V8) but apparently newegg deactivated it I do live in arizona so heat will be a factor. Is it worth scouting one out elsewhere; or are you thinking of another?

Truth be told, I dont totally understand timings and memory specs very well which makes shopping through 500 different memory sticks that much more daunting. Would the XMS3 or even the the OCZ's give me equal chances at working under this build and o/c?

I read through your thread and realized I hadnt even factored in my drives Raid is a new realm for me, and because I have nightly backups to a mediasmart server, I think I could probably do a raid-0 config to speed things up (Alot of my files are supersize) I'll do some homeworks today but I am open to suggestions on this as well.

The coolermaster V8 is okay. I'd go with the noctua if you're looking to get it all in one place. Great cooler and descent price with combo on i7 920, will handle 3.6ghz+ overclocks pretty easily. (not sure what you're trying to get this i7 to) For the memory, the dominaters are what you call "trendy" hardware, so I'd ditch those. Also for what you're doing the GTX 285 FTW is a bit overpriced and excessive, I'd personally go with a 275 as the performance between the 275 and 285 is marginal. For monitors, I recently purchased a 19" ASUS wide for a friend, pretty nice panel even though it's a TN type, I was impressed. The ASUS monitors are pretty descent. Seeing as you do a lot of video editing type stuff, you might look into getting a IPS or MVA panel type of monitor if you can spend the cash. If you have a TN panel now and are happy with it, stick with it, they are cheap. If you want the good panel type, they will run you 450$+. Here's a few. Dell 24" Ultrasharp 650$, on sale at times, one of the best. 450$ on Dell's refurb site. Dell 22" Ultrasharp 279$ 2209WA is an IPS, the 2208 is a TN panel. Here's my suggestion on parts, also threw in HD's as you forgot about those. Run dual WD 640gb's in RAID 0 and you will be flying through your video editing. It's very easy to setup these days. Hope this helps, welcome to OCN.
