GSingh's build looks ok for my budget; I still need to purchase a LCD screen but I can live with a small one. Keyboard; if small, good. Mouse is covered.

I don't think I need the Tom Clancy Game disc. I have a shelf full of games that I've accumulated over the years and haven't being able to play. (512 mb ram computer here)
Do I really need a seperate cooling system or can I live with the fans that come with the case? The computer's going to be in an open area (not in a closet or shelf) and I'm not a hardcore gamer.

What about power supply?

Do you think the Guardian 921 case is good for all of this? Will it fit and will I have room for a fair amount of upgrades in the future (extra ram, HDD, etc)

Best I could do...$1150 WITH OS if you don't need an OS its $1080, everything has free shipping and there is also $55 in rebates

CASE: COOLER MASTER RC-690
CPU: Intel Core i7 920 Nehalem 2.66GHz
MOBO+OS: GIGABYTE GA-EX58-UD3R & Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 64-bit
GPU + PSU: EVGA GeForce GTX 260 Core 216 & CORSAIR 550W
HDD: Western Digital Caviar Black WD1001FALS 1TB
RAM: G.SKILL 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600
DVD: LG 22X DVD±R DVD Burner
CPU Cooler: XIGMATEK Dark Knight-S1283V
Therm Paste: ARCTIC COOLING MX-2

If you plan to SLI in the future get the CORSAIR 750W

Ways to cut down the budget...
If you live near a Micro Center you can pick up the i7 in store for $230
Drop the hard drive down to the Western Digital Caviar Black 640GB
With those it would cut it down $90

Good build, but missing the OS.

I'd love to see a 920+mobo for $350. Linky please, and I'll buy too.

@ OP: Since you need a monitor along with this, I guess I wouldn't recommend an i7. Phenom II is a cheaper alternative. Performance isn't nearly as good as the i7, so it won't last you as long in the long run, but it's still a very good processor for today's day and age. It'll definitely do anything you need for it to do right now, including play Crysis all maxed out.

If it were me personally, I'd go with an i7 or save up until I could get one, just because I know it would last me a long time and I'm kind of an Intel guy at heart anyway (though I do have a couple AMD rigs). But with $1,000 as your budget, and needing an OS and monitor, I can't see how you could make it work. Phenom II is the next best thing.

The reviews for the sapphire 100245HDMI Radeon HD 4850 512 MB 256 bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire supported Video card says the fan is loud, and I prefer quiet computers; is there a cheap extra fan or are the fans on the Guardian 921 (Front, Side, and back 120mm) good enough?

AND is the Guardian 921 good for this build? I really like the way it looks and the light weight.

I know you posted in the Intel section, but for your price point, I would think you would get a much better value out of a Phenom 2 build, but thats just me
